Austria's 3x3 basketball players narrowly fail in the quarterfinals!

In Vienna, where the 3×3 basketball tournament is currently in full swing, the local women missed their chance to reach the quarterfinals. The team, consisting of Alexia Allesch, Anja Fuchs-Robetin, Rebekka Kalaydjiev and Sigrid Koizar, had to admit defeat to the Hungarian team from Györ with 10:13 on Friday evening. In the decisive game against Portugal, a long lead was not enough and the Austrians lost 18:21. Rebekka Kalaydjiev expressed disappointment at the defeats and emphasized that they had a win in both games. The Austrian women had previously successfully qualified for the European Championships, but only have a short time to take revenge.

While the Austrian players were eliminated from the tournament, the 3×3 men, as Team Vienna, can demonstrate their skills on Saturday. The question remains whether they can make up for women's achievements. The anticipation for their games is palpable and the fans are hoping for exciting basketball.

Impressive performances at the European Championships

A completely different picture emerges from the German 3×3 basketball players, who qualified for the quarter-finals at the European Championships in Vienna. They won their opening game impressively 21:7 against Romania. Despite a defeat against Poland (14:21), they can play against the Netherlands on Saturday. Only Elisa Mevius, the best shooter in the game against Romania, has joined the current team from the successful Olympians on the gold team in Paris, after Svenja Brunckhorst ended her career and Svenja Greinacher was sidelined with a hand injury. National coach Samir Suliman is still optimistic, his players have shown impressive performances and are aiming for another win. “We just have to attack,” he tells the girls.

For Germany, however, success in 3×3 basketball is no coincidence. The national women's team has developed continuously in recent years and attracted attention for the first time at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. At that time, however, the team remained without a medal because they missed qualification. But in 2024, the team finally won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Paris after an impressive group stage with six wins and just one loss. This success shows how far they have come in a very short time and their desire to continue to be at the top.

Current developments show that 3×3 basketball is becoming increasingly popular in Austria and Germany. The elite basketball players do everything they can to make their nations proud. We are now looking forward to the next encounters in Vienna and the further development of sport in the region.
