Eat smart, live healthy: Project revolutionizes school meals in Vienna!

In Vienna it's all about children's health: The project “Be Smart – Eat Healthy” has set itself the goal of supporting students, parents and educators in 17 primary schools. A balanced diet is being worked on here, especially in the districts of Leopoldstadt, Favoriten, Simmering, Brigittenau and Floridsdorf. Like that Vienna district newspaper reported, this important project will be continued in Phase II from 2025 to 2027. The focus is on a practice-oriented healthy diet, which should not only find its way into schools but also into families.

Since 2020, in the first phase of the project, intensive work has been done to raise nutritional awareness. In the new phase, schools also have the opportunity to receive valuable tips on how to implement healthy eating habits. This includes both the kitchen and canteen staff as well as the teachers. The project will include workshops, cookbook initiatives for children and creative school activities that promote the joy of cooking and healthy eating.

Diverse offers for everyone involved

Particular attention is paid to school meals. In the future, those responsible for school nutrition will receive targeted training in order to optimize the food on offer and select healthy, nutritious dishes. This project is supported by practice-oriented materials that are intended to help children, parents and educators to apply the knowledge they have learned in everyday life. TIG explains that the exchange between schools and the networking of experts is intended to ensure sustainable dissemination of the project.

“Parent-child cooking” is a popular format that brings parents and children together and shows them how easy and tasty healthy eating can be. Information evenings and workshops are also offered for both children and kitchen staff in order to get the entire school and family community on board.

Important developments for the future

The importance of a healthy diet cannot be overemphasized. Recent studies show that healthy eating habits are crucial for children's physical and mental development. The proportion of overweight and obese children has increased in recent decades Eat well together reported. A healthy meal plan can cover up to 40% of children's daily energy needs while providing a valuable platform for nutrition education.

The “Be Smart – Eat Healthy” project is an example of how schools, families and communities can work together for a better nutritional future. By pooling strengths and knowledge, we are well on the way to promoting and strengthening the health awareness of the youngest generation.
