Floridsdorf Youth Parliament: Projects for a better quality of life!

It's that time again in Floridsdorf: The youth parliament "Word Up! 21" has presented its winning projects for the 2024/25 school year. The exciting final presentation took place on June 23, 2025 in the Shopping Center Nord, where numerous participants presented the results of their creative ideas. Deputy District Chief Josef Fischer was present and recognized the importance of the initiatives for the local community.

A total of four exciting projects with a total budget of 70,000 euros were selected. These include:

  • W-LAN im Underground / Skatepark Nordbrücke
  • Sitzbank mit Ladestation bei der Bildungseinrichtung „Willy Resetarits“ (Bentheimstraße/Kahlgasse)
  • Trampoline in der Parkanlage Gitlbauergasse
  • Neue Fußballtore in der Parkanlage Lüssenpromenade

The youth parliament WordUp!21 actively promotes participatory democracy among young people aged 13 to 14. This initiative has proven to be really valuable in increasing the quality of life in Floridsdorf and picking up new ideas from young people. This school year the budget was increased by 40 percent, representing a notable increase to 70,000 euros, supported by funding from the City of Vienna and organizations such as the Vienna Youth Centers Association.

A strong sign of youth participation

In total, over 500 young people took part in the final vote, which shows the great response and commitment of the young population. Eight projects were available for voting by the 3rd and 4th grades, with only the best ideas being selected for implementation. Organized by the local youth centers, the students collected ideas that not only improve their own living space, but also involve other citizens.

The success of these projects speaks volumes: young people are ready to take responsibility and actively contribute to shaping their environment. Similar models are becoming increasingly relevant in other cities too. According to the German Federal Youth Council, the participation of young people in local decisions is being increasingly encouraged. Youth parliaments are a proven format for giving young people a voice and actively involving them in decision-making processes, as [dbjr.de](https://www.dbjr.de/artikel/jugendparlamente-als-ein-format-der-kommunalen-jugend participation) states.

The projects resulting from this exchange are expected to be implemented in the coming months. The participating schools, including MS Leopoldau, NMS Adolf Loos Gasse and many others, put together their ideas and presented them for the benefit of the community.

What does the future hold?

The positive feedback and the active participation of young people give hope that such initiatives from Floridsdorf will also be strengthened in the future. Giving youth a say not only promotes their concerns, but also a new perspective on the challenges and opportunities in the city. It remains to be seen what exciting projects will emerge next, but one thing is certain: the young people are setting the tone and showing that they can actively shape their environment.
