Anger as a motor: This is how Ottakring's Thaliastrasse is changing for the better!
Anger is an emotion that is commonplace in Ottakring. Editor Lukas Ipirotis describes himself as an “old Grantler” and in his article addresses the everyday challenges that the Viennese face. From rude drivers to people pushing in front of you to a lack of appreciation at work – there are many causes for a bad mood. But as Ipirotis emphasizes, it is precisely this anger that can lead to positive changes. An example of this is the redesign of Thaliastrasse, which was carried out according to the wishes of the residents. The final work has now been completed thanks to successful citizen participation. This shows that popular support is crucial for such changes.
Thaliastrasse stretches over 2.8 kilometers in the 16th district and is currently being redesigned in three stages. Although work has been in full swing since 2021, the upgrade is expected to be completed by 2024. The new asphalt surfaces and the numerous trees help to significantly improve the quality of stay. Over 180 new trees, seating areas and fog steles have already been incorporated into the redesign to create more space for pedestrians and cyclists, as wien.gv.at shows.
Sustainable design of Thaliastrasse
The measures are not only a feast for the eyes, but also a contribution to sustainable urban development. In recent years, around 3,400 square meters of asphalt have been unsealed and over 90 new trees have been planted. The water is channeled through innovative underground infiltration bodies. This is particularly important in times of climate change, as ProjectCity emphasizes. This organization relies on the participation of citizens to improve their quality of life in the city. This not only protects the environment, but also motivates residents to actively participate in the change.
From April to September 2020, over 3,000 participants submitted their ideas for redesigning Thaliastrasse. Such initiatives are essential for urban development. Collaboration with urban planners and infrastructure experts has shown that successful projects are based on the wishes and needs of the population. The example of Thaliastrasse illustrates how important it is to include the opinions of residents in urban planning so that an environment in which people feel comfortable is ultimately created.
Insights into future design
The redesign will improve Thaliastrasse and make it safer for all road users: In addition to wider sidewalks and seating, there will also be improvements at the stops on tram line 46. The design and new structuring of the various areas create space for mobile lounges that can be used not only for leisure but also to promote community activities.
The final expansion phase from Huttengasse to Johann-Staud-Straße begins in August 2024 and promises to further revitalize the area. The newly created and safer routes to school through new bus stations not only promote mobility, but also the quality of life of families in Ottakring. Anger at the grievances can definitely turn into something positive if it helps to shape and improve our environment.
