Greening offensive in the 6th district: 14 new trees for Mariahilf!
Things are going strong in Mariahilf! The greening offensive on the Linke Wienzeile is in the starting blocks for the final phase. On July 1st, the fifth and final stage of the “Out of the Asphalt” project was started, which is now being pushed forward between the Reinprechtsdorfer Bridge and the Neville Bridge. Loud My district The planting campaign includes 14 new trees and colorful flower beds to increase the quality of stay in the 6th district.
The goal is clear: cooler air for residents and a more ecological environment. In this context, the selection of plants is particularly important. 14 columnar bubble trees are planned, which will be combined with species-rich green beds including lavender, catnip and red tulips. The Vienna press highlights that these measures contribute to improving the microclimate in the city. Urban greenery not only has aesthetic advantages, but also acts as a natural air filter that absorbs pollutants and thus improves air quality.
Increasing quality of life
“The quality of life of the residents is important to us,” says deputy district manager Julia Lessacher, commenting on the initiative. These greening measures not only create new living spaces for plants and animals, but also improve the living conditions for local people. And this is not an isolated case: in the first four stages of the project, 43 trees and 22 columnar bubble trees have already been planted, providing the city with a total of over 3,300 new street trees.
“Out of the Asphalt” is a groundbreaking initiative that is scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2025. While work is taking place in the construction area, pedestrian traffic will remain possible and a lane for cars will be temporarily available. This means residents can continue to move around their neighborhoods freely.
Green retreats in the city
Another highlight are the two new green retreats in the area: The Barbara Prammer Park will be upgraded with 14 new trees and an additional area of 600 square meters. In addition, the former Naschmarkt parking lot will be transformed into a 6,300 square meter green oasis. These projects are part of a comprehensive urban development that also focuses on improving biodiversity in urban areas, as shown by the findings of Green Kama can be seen.
With more than 340 “Out of the Asphalt” projects in the last five years and a record sum of over 100 million euros raised for the “Livable Climate Model City” program, the urban green initiative in Vienna is given outstanding importance.
Expectations are high and the vision of a greener, more livable city is already taking shape. It remains to be seen how the new measures will affect the Viennese's attitude to life. The fact is: Vienna is becoming greener - and that is not only good for nature, but also for the people who live here.
