Liesing Bridge in Schwechat shines after extensive renovation

Another chapter in infrastructure history is opening in Schwechat. The extensive renovation of the Liesing Bridge was officially completed today. Werner Herbert, the responsible project manager, announced the completion of the bridge, which is part of the L 2071 state road, at a celebratory event. Mayor Karin Baier and DI Harald Kaufmann, head of the Lower Austrian road construction department in Tulln, were also present.

The bridge, which was originally built in 1995, is a single-span reinforced concrete slab structure that has a total span of almost 18 meters. There were some challenges to overcome during the renovation. The old construction no longer met today's standards due to time damage to the asphalt layers and a non-barrier-free pedestrian ramp. It was therefore decided not only to renovate the bridge, but to completely rebuild it.

Extensive renovation work

The renovation measures were varied and were carried out with a clear goal: to make the bridge safer and more accessible for future use. The following points stood out among the work coordinated by the Lower Austrian Road Construction Department:

  • Erneuerung der Asphaltschichten
  • Abtrag der alten Pflaster-Querungshilfe
  • Errichtung einer neuen Querungshilfe in Stahlbeton
  • Abflachung der Fußgängerrampe für eine barrierefreie Nutzung

The construction work was carried out by the Porr company in collaboration with regional construction and delivery companies during a total closure in the first half of September 2025. The total construction costs amount to around 70,000 euros, which are borne entirely by the state of Lower Austria.

Investments in infrastructure

This conversion is part of a larger trend in Austria, where the infrastructure is continually being modernized. Annual investments are evident not only in the field of road construction, but also in other sectors. Asfinag is investing over 1 billion euros and ÖBB even more than 2 billion euros in various projects. Current major projects include the new construction of the Koralmbahn Graz-Klagenfurt and work on the Semmering base tunnel, which will extend until 2026, as report.at reports.

Overall, the completion of the Liesing Bridge shows that the Schwechat region is not only working on the existing structures, but is also constantly meditating on the future. These decisions are important in order to guarantee lively and safe transport routes and to ensure a high quality of life.
