Scary places in Vienna: These hotspots cause chills!
Halloween is just around the corner and spooky fans are becoming more and more active in Vienna too. More and more people are discovering the city's numerous historical places, which provide spooky experiences, and not just during Halloween. Vienna invites you to delve into its dark past and explore the mystery behind the eerie scenes.
The city has a wealth of spooky sites that are perfect for a spooky tour. Particularly noteworthy are the Kandl Chapel in Atzgersdorf, which is linked to the dark history of Theresia Kandl. This woman was the first to be executed in Vienna after she was said to have murdered her husband with an ax. Her ghost is said to still wander around the chapel, which was moved in the 1970s, as meinbezirk.at reports.
Insights into the scary truths
The Cemetery of the Nameless in Alberner Hafen is also one of the scariest places in Vienna. Around 600 unidentified bodies that were washed up by the Danube rest here. Not only is this remote cemetery difficult to find, but you enter at your own risk. The mysterious atmosphere captivated many visitors. Urlaubsguru lists this place as particularly haunting.
Back in the 1st district are the catacombs of St. Stephen's Cathedral, which once housed over 10,000 people until 1783. This “City of the Dead” is only accessible on guided tours that tell exciting stories from the past. The Vienna Underworld, an extensive network of cellars and catacombs, also offers various tours in which Vienna's secret historians are revealed.
Another scary place is the Capuchin Crypt, which contains the final resting places of the Habsburgs and stretches back over 400 years of history. The remains of 150 personalities can be found here, making a visit essential for history and horror fans. Tickets start at 13 euros and the crypt is open daily.
Scary tours for adventure seekers
For all those who want to experience even more of the uncanny, the Vienna Tour organizes special spooky tours. Under the motto “Scary Stories for the Brave”, those interested can take an exciting tour of former cemeteries, execution sites and other spooky places. These tours not only offer exciting stories about ghosts and vampires, but also interesting insights into the flora and fauna of Vienna's dark side.
The only requirement for participation is prior registration, which must be done at least 48 hours before the tour date. The next tours are planned for October 30th and 31st, 2025, at 4:30 p.m.
And if you think that's all, you're wrong. Other eerie hotspots such as the ruined villa in Dehnepark or the old fool's tower in the 9th district are waiting to be discovered. Whether on your own or on a guided tour – Vienna has a lot in store for skeptics and horror lovers.
