Carnival 2025 started with crisp waltz steps at the Graben!

On November 11, 2025 at 11:11 a.m. the starting signal for the 2025/26 ball season in Vienna was fired at Stephansplatz. The traditional audience quadrille gathered hundreds of Viennese people and tourists around them and let the Graben shine in a colorful dance festival. This event is no ordinary launch; It is considered the unofficial start of carnival in the city and attracts onlookers from all over the world every year, which further fuels anticipation for the upcoming festival season.

Dozens of dancing couples whirled across the square, much to the delight of the spectators. Under the guidance of experienced dance masters and dance teachers, the participants were able to demonstrate their skills. The focus of the celebrations was the organizer Karin Lemberger, President of the Association of Vienna Dance Schools. She emphasized that this year is particularly significant as we celebrate the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss, whose waltz sounds filled the pit during the event.

A celebration for everyone

The audience quadrille is not only a feast for the eyes, but also an opportunity for all Viennese to share their passion for dancing. There are a total of 25 dance schools in Vienna that offer a variety of dance courses all year round, including special intensive courses during ball season. So everyone – whether beginner or experienced dancer – will find a suitable offer and can become part of the festive atmosphere.

But the term “Viennese” goes beyond dancing. It not only describes the people from our beautiful capital, but also includes cultural and culinary aspects. The famous Vienna sausages, for example, are an internationally valued dish and are firmly linked to the city. The Wiener Werkstätte and the traditional Wiener Zeitung are also examples of the cultural diversity that defines Vienna, as can be found on Wikipedia here.

Looking forward to carnival

For the Viennese, Carnival is a time of joy and celebration. Preparations for the ball season are already in full swing. The coming weeks will feature numerous balls and other festive events. Even if the audience quadrille is a special highlight, it is just the start of a colorful hustle and bustle that will accompany the Viennese with a lot of joy over the next few months.

The music of Johann Strauss will be with us for a long time. After all, it's not just about dancing - it's a tribute to the cultural heritage that defines Vienna and creates a living connection between past and present. So stay tuned, because there is always something to celebrate in Vienna!
