Help on two wheels: AWA* brings support to Vienna!

In the heart of Vienna, the awareness collective AWA* brings a breath of fresh air to the city every week. On this unusually cool summer evening, Georgmaria and Willi are part of a team of five who set out to support people in the city center. The group has been carrying out operations in heavily frequented places since May 9th, 2025 and is active until September 20th. The time is always between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m., which is ideal for supporting night owls. That's what she reports The press.

The use of the AWA* groups is varied. They listen, offer snacks and band-aids, and are there when things get tough. As they parade through the streets, not only is their commitment visible, but also their eye-catching cargo bike, equipped with a purple flag and colorful lights. This ensures that they are not only a contact point, but also a symbol of support. This campaign is supported by MA 13 through the city of Vienna and has established itself as an important part of city life since 2021.

Where does the path lead?

The locations are carefully chosen: on the Danube Canal, around Karlsplatz and in Resselpark in the city park as well as along the ring, where they meet people who may need a listening ear or a helping hand. The support of the AWA* group is aimed at all those who feel overwhelmed or have found themselves in situations that appear discriminatory or inappropriate. This refers to a variety of forms of discrimination, be it through racist behavior, sexual harassment or other physical attacks. Anyone interested can find information about the locations and more at AWA star.

A central component of awareness work is understanding structural power relations and various forms of discrimination. This task force is committed to not leaving those affected alone and to effectively address social problems through targeted support. The principles of awareness work are deeply anchored: focus on those affected, confidentiality and the creation of safe spaces are the top priority. This provides an insight into the basics of this work Awareness Institute.
