Strache starts as the new district councilor in Floridsdorf – what comes next?
On the now bright Wednesday, June 12, 2025, Heinz-Christian Strache entered the Floridsdorf district council hall at 4 p.m. and began his new office as district councilor. Strache, who didn't really get very high with his team HC Strache in the election on April 27th, nevertheless accepted the challenge and is happy about his role in the district and grassroots work. His mandate was a small ray of hope after a disappointing vote return of only 1.1 percent in the Vienna elections at municipal level, where he was unable to enter the municipal council for the second time in a row. His team, which lost influence in the district elections and can only provide two mandates, is now relying on a breath of fresh air in the district.
The mandate won by Strache and his team in Floridsdorf, along with another in the Danube city, is one of the team's few remaining mandates, whose number of mandates has recently shrunk from 17 to 2, as Kurier also reports. A total of 60 district councilors were sworn in at the constituent meeting, including the SPÖ club director Karin Tomanek-Ambrozy, who will take over the chairmanship of the district parliament.
New outdoor swimming pool and school places
An important point on the agenda under district leader Georg Papai (SP) was the planning for a new outdoor swimming pool in Stammersdorf and the search for a suitable property. The city appears to be investing in leisure activities and education in the coming months. New building plans for school places were also discussed at this meeting, a topic of great interest to many local residents.
A curious detail: a previously announced “Ibiza party” in front of the Am Spitz district office was canceled without further ado. That raises questions about what else city decision-makers have in store for its citizens.
A look at the history of district councils
The function of district councils dates back to 1851 and has undergone constant change over the years. The district councils have existed in their current form since 1900. It is interesting that the number of mandates in the districts has changed depending on the political weight of the parties. Today there are 30 to 60 district councils responsible for each district, depending on the size and needs of the community. A detailed overview of the district councils and their tasks can be found in the Vienna City Administration.
Strache is paid 578 euros per month for his commitment to the district, which he receives 14 times a year. It remains to be seen whether this sum will provide enough motivation for the current Vice Chancellor to breathe new life into the Floridsdorf district. What is certain is that he started this new task with joy and is taking the first step into a new political chapter.
