Festive Last Waltz” in the Konzerthaus: Critical notes on the Strauss dynasty

On June 6, 2025, a special event in the “Johann Strauss 2025 Vienna” series took place in the renowned Konzerthaus in Vienna. On this day, the anniversary of the funeral of Johann Strauss Jr. (died June 3, 1899), the event was celebrated under the title “SAVE THE LAST WALTZ FOR ME”. This unique performance was intended not only to honor the composer's legacy, but also to appeal to a younger audience, who were packed in the foyers of the concert hall and applauded even though there were no dances. This is a striking contrast to the vibrant Strauss dynasty of the 19th century, which was associated with a certain grace and elegance. While the modern sounds of music filled the air, a short film by Oskar Haag and Oliver Welter was shown in the background, offering the audience an introductory overview.

The program, which was described as a “theatre-disco”, thrilled the audience with performances by artists such as Lino Camillo, Peaches, The Royal Strauss Language Orchestra and Naked Lunch. Another highlight was the presentation of a paraphrase of the Kaiser Waltz by the talented Verena Altenberger. At the crowning conclusion of this 105-minute event, Lars Eidinger took over the DJ desk and provided the musical finale.

An extensive anniversary program

The event was part of a much larger cultural celebration that the city of Vienna is planning to mark the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss. This ambitious program includes a total of 65 productions and 3 exhibitions taking place at 69 different locations in Vienna. The variety of offerings ranges from classical concerts to non-classical performances, operettas, theater performances, dance, circus, installations, exhibitions, film and science. A key element of these extensive celebrations is the valuable collaboration with the Vienna cemeteries, which also enabled a film to be made at Johann Strauss' grave.

Looking at the upcoming events, one can say that Vienna has a very good hand at this. This initiative is intended not only to put the great master's classics in the spotlight, but also to bring a breath of fresh air into today's music scene. The events are aimed not only at die-hard fans of the Strauss dynasty, but also at anyone curious about contemporary interpretations of classical music.

Further information about the extensive program can be found at Johann Strauss 2025 or in Vienna district newspaper, where the various event highlights are also highlighted.
