Viennese sausage stands 2025: The best gourmet places awarded

On Tuesday, September 9th, 2025, it was that time again: the most popular sausage stands in Vienna were honored in Haus Schottentor. Organized by Falstaff Street Food Guide, the event presented the result of an extensive assessment of 113 sausage stands, 94 of which are located in Vienna.

The Viennese sausage stand culture, which was officially recognized as a UNESCO cultural heritage in 2024, has a long tradition. It originated in the 18th century when the first 'Bratlbraters' began selling warm sausages. These stands are not only restaurants, but also social meeting places that shape the cityscape of Vienna. The operators, often small family businesses, contribute to the emblematic of this culture, which is characterized by an informal atmosphere and specific vocabulary, such as the UNESCO determines.

Double peak and special prices

The “Wiener Würstelstand” in Pfeilgasse leads the rankings, followed by “Bitzinger at the Albertina”. Both received an outstanding 96 points. Special prizes were also awarded for the special commitment and services in the industry:

A look into the future

The Viennese sausage stand culture does not stand still. The Vienna Würstelstand Rally, organized by Falstaff, will take place on September 17th. This event promises not only culinary highlights, but also a platform to further promote exchange and awareness of these cultural treasures.

The sausage stands, which represent the heart of Vienna with their long tradition and unique atmosphere, will continue to thrive on the enthusiasm and humor of the Viennese. The Kulturgut Würstelstand remains a constant companion in the city, whose importance and diversity should also be preserved in the future. As the ORF emphasizes, this is not just a celebration of food, but also of community and Viennese identity.
