New SPÖ government team: Ludwig presents exciting changes!
Today Vienna witnessed an exciting press conference from the SPÖ. Mayor Michael Ludwig presented the new government team and announced important mandate changes that will shape the capital's political landscape. Numerous media representatives were present, eagerly awaiting the details.
In a courageous decision, Peter Hanke, previously City Councilor for Finance, has given up his office to become Federal Minister for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology since March 3, 2025. This castling opens up new opportunities, which Christoph Maschek will take over on an interim basis, while Barbara Novak will now take over the management of the finance, economics, labor and international departments. Novak's successor in the state parliament will be Thomas Mader from Döbling.
The new leadership team
Kathrin Gaál will remain deputy mayor and will continue in her role as city councilor for housing and women. Ulli Sima also remains loyal to city planning and also takes over the municipal utilities while handing over the markets. Jürgen Czernohorszky, who has been politically active since 1995, can continue to take care of climate, environment and human resources and is now also responsible for the Vienna baths. Veronica Kaup-Hasler, who has been part of the government team since 2018, remains city councilor for culture and science, and Peter Hacker takes care of health and sport.
The SPÖ committees met on Wednesday morning to discuss Ludwig's proposal for the new personnel package, which was approved unanimously. A significant official confirmation for Ludwig as state party leader was also made. “We are ready to face the challenges of the coming years,” emphasized Ludwig during the press conference.
Reactions and criticism
The new team is not only exciting from within, the opposition has also already raised its first critical voices. The Neos, for example, will vote on a possible coalition with the SPÖ on June 7th. The critical comments on the Vienna government program cannot be overlooked either. However, the voices of the new city government members, whose extensive qualifications and experience are considerable, could help smooth things over.
The coming months will show how the changes in the government team will affect the city of Vienna. Citizens and city politicians are eagerly awaiting the first steps of the new “upturn coalition”, which has already raised high expectations in advance. Further information on the government program is expected in the next few weeks.
