Vienna climate team: 23 new projects for a green city started!
In the third year of its existence, the “climate team” in Vienna has once again taken important steps to green the city. How crown reported, 23 new projects are being implemented in the districts of Alsergrund, Meidling and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. This initiative allows Viennese people to actively participate in shaping their neighborhoods and contribute ideas for climate protection. Around 1,600 suggestions were submitted for selection, with citizens from Alsergrund being particularly active.
The proposed ideas were carefully organized thematically and spatially, allowing 41 viable projects to be developed. A jury of randomly selected citizens selected the final projects over three weekends in May and June. A total of eight initiatives were selected for Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, eight for Meidling and seven for Alsergrund.
Diverse projects for a better quality of life
Among the new projects, a few are particularly noteworthy: In Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, Friesgasse is being converted into a meeting area and Maria von Siege-Platz is being upgraded. A free bicycle self-help workshop is being built in Meidling and a “biodiversity corridor” is being created. The Alsergrund shines with the greening of the club entrances and the establishment of an energy community for social electricity distribution. These initiatives show how committed citizens are to sustainable urban development.
The climate team not only sees itself as implementing these projects, but would also like to involve the population more closely in the future. Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky plans to expand the climate team concept so that even more Viennese can contribute their ideas. From September 2023, new ideas for the Josefstadt and Penzing districts will already be collected, as shown on the website Vienna climate teams described.
Projects that have already been successfully implemented
As part of the previous phases of the project, 34 concrete ideas have already been implemented, including new greening solutions in schools and walking communities to reduce car traffic in the school environment. Traffic calming measures, such as bollards on busy street corners, have also been successfully installed to increase the quality of life in the districts. Other exciting developments such as the provision of cargo bikes in Floridsdorf show how diverse the approaches are to making Vienna more climate-friendly the standard reported.
Overall, it shows that the climate team represents a successful concept of citizen participation in climate protection. Through the active participation of residents, Vienna can not only become greener, but also more livable. With the upcoming presentation of the selected projects, a further step towards a more sustainable metropolis will be taken.
