E-scooter robbery in Vienna: perpetrator tears gold chain from woman's neck!

A frightening incident took place in the heart of Vienna, more precisely in Waldmüller Park. On June 19, 2025, a 32-year-old woman traveling with her five-year-old son was the victim of a brutal robbery. An unknown perpetrator, who was riding an e-scooter, circled the two of them and suddenly hit the woman in the chest before tearing a gold chain from her neck and fleeing towards the Margaret Belt. The police were immediately alerted, but the search for the e-scooter driver was unsuccessful. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office, South branch, has taken over the investigation in order to bring the perpetrator to account. But this incident is not isolated. Just recently, on Yppenplatz, there was a robbery at a tobacconist's shop in which a masked man with a gun demanded cash from an employee and also escaped on an e-scooter. This raid happened around 6 a.m. on Friday morning to bring the loot towards Brunnenmarkt. Fortunately, the employee was uninjured. Here too, the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, West branch, has taken over the investigation and is asking witnesses for information about suspicious observations. Kurier reports that ...

Growing problem with e-scooters

These attacks highlight the growing problem surrounding e-scooters in the city. In 2024, there were two fatal accidents and almost 400 injuries caused by e-scooter users. The number of these accidents is increasing, especially due to drivers who are drunk or drugged and driving recklessly. Federal Police Director Michael Takacs speaks of an alarming increase in administrative offenses involving alcohol, with over 200 percent more reports compared to previous years. 3,409 reports against e-scooter drivers were recorded in 2024 alone, more than twice as many as in 2021. Today reports that ...

In response to this emergency, the police launched the “Vienna rolls safely” campaign to draw attention to the issue and punish serious violations of the rules. During these checks, particular attention is paid to driving on sidewalks, driving through red lights and using cell phones. The traffic rules, which also apply to e-scooters, are clear: it is forbidden to ride on the sidewalk, no passengers are allowed, and exceeding the speed limit of a maximum of 25 km/h can lead to severe penalties. Fines for drunk driving can range between 800 and 5,900 euros and can lead to a driver's license being revoked.

The incidents of the last few days not only illustrate the dangers of e-scooters on the road, but also the growing crime associated with these means of transport. Whether in the parks or at Yppenplatz, the city of Vienna must increasingly deal with the new challenges in order to ensure the safety of all citizens.
