E-scooter robbery in Vienna: perpetrator tears Ms. Golden chain off your neck!

Waldmüllerpark, Wien, Österreich - in the heart of Vienna, more precisely in the Waldmüllerpark, a terrifying incident took place. On June 19, 2025, a 32-year-old woman who was traveling with her five-year-old son was victims of a brutal robbery. An unknown perpetrator who drove on an e-scooter circled the two and suddenly slapped the woman onto the chest before pulling her a golden chain off her neck and fled towards the margaret belt. The police were immediately alerted, but the search was unsuccessful after the fleeting e-scooter driver. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office, South branch, has taken over the investigation to hold the perpetrator into account. OE24 reports that…

But this incident is not isolated. Just before, at the Yppenplatz, a robbery occurred on a tobacco shop, in which a masked man with a weapon demanded cash from an employee and also escaped on an e-scooter. This raid happened around 6 a.m. on Friday morning to bring the prey towards the Brunnenmarkt. Fortunately, the employee was not injured. Here, too, the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, West, has taken over the investigation and asks witnesses to provide information on suspicious observations. Kurier reports that ...

growing problem with e-scooters

These raids also make a highlight of the growing problem around e-scooters in the city. In 2024 there were two fatal accidents and almost 400 injuries by e-scooter users. The number of these accidents increases, especially by drivers who are alcoholic or under drugs and ruthlessly drive. Federal police director Michael Takacs speaks of an alarming increase in administrative violations in the alcoholized area, with over 200 percent more advertisements compared to previous years. 3,409 advertisements against e-scooter drivers were recorded in 2024 alone, more than twice as many as 2021.

The police launched the “Vienna rolls safely” from this emergency to draw attention to the topic and to punish serious violations of the rules. During these controls, driving is particularly important to drive on sidewalks, driving over red traffic lights and the benefit of the cell phone. The traffic rules, which also apply to e-scooters, are clear: it is prohibited to drive on the sidewalk, no passengers must be taken with them, and a maximum of 25 km/h can lead to sensitive punishments. Leader can be between 800 and 5,900 euros when driving alcoholized and lead to a license withdrawal.

The incidents of the past few days not only illustrate the dangers of e-scooters in road traffic, but also the growing crime in connection with these means of transportation. Whether in the parks or at Yppenplatz, the city of Vienna has to deal with the new challenges to ensure the security of all citizens.
