12-year-old attacked in Vienna: Perpetrator from shared apartment arrested!

In Vienna, a 12-year-old was the victim of an attack on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. in Fünfhaus, where the boy first met a 13-year-old acquaintance and later two other young people aged 14 and 15. The situation escalated when the two older teenagers demanded money from the 12-year-old. Beatings and robbery were the shocking result; Cash, a necklace and a vest were taken from the boy. Fortunately, the victim's injuries only sustained minor scratches.

The police's quick reaction meant that the victim was able to identify the two suspects based on a missing report during the inspection in Wurmsergasse. They had previously been reported missing from a residential community for young people. Just hours after the attack, the perpetrators were found in their accommodation and arrested on instructions from the public prosecutor. You have Syrian citizenship and were transferred to a prison. After being questioned, the victim was returned to the care of his legal guardians while the investigation continues.

Focus on juvenile crime

Such incidents highlight the current situation of juvenile crime. An analysis found that youth violence in Germany reached a peak of around 13,800 cases in 2024, and the factors behind this increase are diverse. Stress caused by the corona pandemic and increasing psychological stress in connection with social challenges are cited as the main reasons. In Austria, too, young people are repeatedly involved in crimes, which is worrying.

The vast majority of young suspects are male, which represents another phenomenon in the discussion about juvenile crime. A differentiated view is recommended here, as the explanations for these tendencies are often deeply anchored in social structures, such as traditional role models and hormonal influences. The authorities therefore emphasize the urgently needed prevention and the involvement of child and youth welfare services in order to prevent more possible criminal careers.

Whatever the situation in society, the safety of our children should always be our top priority. Parents and carers are required to keep a close eye on their children's social contacts. In the event of a missing person, the police can be supported by filing a missing person's report. This should contain all the necessary personal information and developments should be followed on the Internet in order to be able to intervene in a timely manner.
