New construction work and restrictions in Vienna's local transport from September 2025: U4, U6 and tram lines affected.

Vienna in construction chaos: subway and trams at risk!
After the summer there is movement again in Vienna's local transport! However, the return to normality will be accompanied by some restrictions affecting both subway and tram passengers. The chaos after the end of the summer construction sites is noticeable, because there are a number of construction sites and modernizations on the agenda that extend into the autumn holidays.
How Cosmo reported, the U4 and U6 lines are particularly affected. Work is going on diligently at the Tscherttegasse U6 station until December. Anyone traveling in the direction of Vienna-Floridsdorf has to change in Meidling or Am Schöpfwerk - this results in an additional travel time of five to ten minutes. During the autumn holidays, which take place from October 27th to November 3rd, there will also be a switch swap between Spittelau and Jägerstrasse. This means that operations will be completely stopped on this section of the U6. If you want to travel from Siebenhirten to Michelbeuern - AKH, you also have to accept the fact that only every second train travels here.
Further construction site plans
But it's not just about the U6! The U4 will become a construction site from September 22nd. The flooring will be replaced and the guidance system for visually impaired passengers will be modernized. There will be no stops in the direction of Heiligenstadt for some time. From the beginning of November to the beginning of December, the platform opposite in the direction of Vienna-Hütteldorf will be closed. Another construction site is taking place on tram line 5, which will only run to a limited extent between Praterstern and Josefstädter Straße from September 15th to the end of September.
There is a big goal behind this extensive work: the modernization of the public transport network in Vienna. As the Vienna lines emphasize, the expansion and maintenance of the network is necessary in order to make use of it as smooth as possible for all passengers. This is also emphasized by the “Netz est!” initiative, which promises even more comprehensive modernization of tram and subway lines in 2025.
Plans for 2025
Some exciting projects are already being planned. Loud Vienna Offices Eleven kilometers of tracks and 45 new switches will be replaced. The focus is on the following streets:
- Hütteldorfer Straße
- Landstraßer Hauptstraße
- Schlachthausgasse
- Franz-Jonas-Platz
- Schloßhofer Straße
- Innenstadt (Kärntner Ring, Universitätsring, Schubertring)
The subway will also receive eleven new elevators and twelve modern escalators. Particular attention is paid to the U6 and the renovation of platforms, especially in Kagran and at Keplerplatz. The planned renovations and construction projects have the long-term goal of increasing the reliability and security of the entire network.
All in all, it can be said that future passengers will have to approach these modernizations with a little patience and planning. The work is a challenge in everyday traffic, but it helps ensure that Vienna's public transport network remains fit for the future. This makes it all the more important to regularly find out about current timetables and possible diversions!
