Okean Elsy inspires 2,000 fans in Vienna with hopeful music!
In the heart of Vienna, more precisely in the Gasometer, the Ukrainian band Okean Elsy rocked in front of around 2,000 enthusiastic fans. The group, which has been the musical backbone of Ukraine since 1994, was in excellent form on November 1, 2025. Despite the difficult situation in his homeland, the charismatic frontman Svyatoslav Vakarchuk did not allow himself to be intimidated and spoke about the challenges and hopes of the Ukrainian people during the concert.
Vakarchuk, who has an astonishing resume - he even pursued a doctorate in physics before conquering the world stage - addressed the need to combat Russian soft power while the war lasts. In an interview he expressed ambivalence about the current situation. “Cultural debates should only take place after the war,” he emphasized. In addition, he criticized the nomination of conductor Teodor Currentzis to the Austrian Curia for Art and noted that a connection to Russian culture was problematic in these times.
Musical messages and hope
No dark songs were played at the concert in Vienna. Instead, the band sang hopeful hits that underscored Ukrainians' will to resist and emphasized the high price of the war. The #HelpForUkraineTour, which the band is on, aims to raise funds for ambulance protection and promote interest in Ukraine. Over the last 30 years, Okean Elsy has developed a loyal following, which is a rarity in politically young Ukraine.
The Ukrainian language, in which the band also writes many of their songs, has developed over centuries. With around 45 million speakers, it is widespread not only in Ukraine, but also in countries such as Canada, the USA and Belarus. Ukrainian, which belongs to the East Slavic group of Indo-European languages, has retained its independence and is the third most common Slavic language, after Russian and Polish. This cultural identity is central to the messages that Wakarchuk and Okean Elsy convey.
The connection to culture
In his performances, Vakarchuk emphasizes not only the resilient attitude of Ukrainians, but also the pride in their cultural identity and language. This is written using a variant of the Cyrillic alphabet and is seen as an important link to the country's history and culture. While further discussions on cultural issues should take place after the conflict, Okean Elsy's music is a sign of solidarity and pride for many Ukrainians abroad.
Overall, it can be said that Okean Elsy not only excelled musically, but also represents an important voice for Ukrainian identity and resistance to the current challenges. The band's commitment, both in music and in support of their homeland, shows how closely art and social consciousness are linked.
