New life in the new building: Sophie 7 city quarter opens!
Today, November 11, 2025, a very special chapter was opened in Vienna's Neubau: The key handover took place in the “Sophie 7” city district, marking the official start for the new residents. This pioneering project is accompanied by Vice Mayor Kathrin Gaál (SPÖ), district leader Markus Reiter (The Greens), SOCIAL BAU director Hannes Stangl and WBV-GPA managing director Michael Gehbauer. A strong line-up that underlines the importance of this new building project. A total of 176 subsidized apartments are being built in this urban district, including shops, cultural institutions, a kindergarten, an adult education center and a pensioners' meeting point, to name just a few of the highlights.
The area of the former Sophienspital extends over 1.3 hectares, and a further 46 new community apartments are to be added by the beginning of 2026. People don't just live here, they also live: the Kenyon Pavilion will become an event center, while the Karl Ludwig Pavilion will accommodate a kindergarten and assisted living apartments. The project pursues sustainable approaches, including green facades, urban gardening, photovoltaic systems, district heating and geothermal energy. Deputy Mayor Gaál emphasizes the high quality and affordability of residential construction in Vienna - after all, not only city residents should find a new home here, but also a real home for the entire community.
A diverse offering for the population
In addition to the living areas, “Sophie 7” offers numerous opportunities for leisure activities. A public park invites you to relax and at the same time creates space for encounters. A place where you not only live, but also get to know your neighbors better. The entire complex will be completed by the end of 2025, but the first tenants are already looking forward to the catering and event business, which is expected to open in March 2026.
An important aspect of the city district is the idea of education. The adult education center and kindergarten create an attractive educational offering for families. This makes the district a popular place to live for both young and older citizens.
Vienna as a tourist destination and living space
Vienna is not only an attractive destination for travelers, but also offers its residents a high quality of life. Visitors can obtain information at any time at the two tourist information centers in the city center and at the airport. These are open to visitors 365 days a year and provide expert advice on attractions and events. In addition to city maps and brochures, the official Vienna City Card is also available to make your stay in the city even more pleasant.
The city guide app “ivie” is also available to download free of charge and provides tourists with all the important information. This way, you won't miss a look at the extensive possibilities in Vienna, and the local highlights won't go unmentioned either.
Whether for locals or tourists, the environment created by the completion of “Sophie 7” will certainly enrich the cityscape and attract many people in the coming years. Vienna remains a place of opportunity – not just for travelers, but also for everyone who lives and works here.
