Get out of gas: Mobile energy advice started for Mariahilf!
A groundbreaking project is starting in the heart of Vienna, in the Mariahilf district: “Mobile out of gas”. From June 2025, mobile energy advice will actively inform and support the Viennese population when it comes to switching to climate-friendly heating. The project will be ceremoniously opened on June 26th at Johanna-Dohnal-Platz from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and has a clear goal: the transition away from fossil fuels, especially gas, should be promoted.
The “Get Out of Gas Local” contact point at Amerlingstrasse 11 has been active since May and offers weekly consultation appointments every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Anyone interested can take their first steps into the new era of renewable energies here. The information is particularly important given that in Vienna almost 90% of the climate-damaging greenhouse gases in buildings come from gas heating systems, as meinbezirk.at reports.
Important dates for mobile energy advice
- 28. August von 14 bis 18 Uhr an der Kreuzung Gumpendorfer Straße/Lehárgasse
- 2. Oktober von 10 bis 14 Uhr am Kurt-Pint-Platz
- 5. März 2026 von 14 bis 18 Uhr am Fritz-Grünbaum-Platz
These consultation appointments are not only points of contact for questions, but also feature interactive features, including a thermal imaging camera and a wheel of fortune that provides additional information. Supporters such as GB*, Hauskunft Wien and Wien Energie are supporting citizens and ensuring a smooth transition.
The Vienna climate roadmap
The launch of “Raus aus Gas mobil” comes at a time when the Vienna city government is clearly committed to a climate-neutral Vienna. The city is setting new standards with its plan to heat and cool all buildings in a climate-neutral manner using renewable energy by 2040. Mayor Michael Ludwig emphasizes that dependence on fossil fuels such as gas is increasingly becoming a problem, especially due to geopolitical developments in connection with the war in Ukraine, as oekobusiness.wien.at notes.
Almost 600,000 gas appliances are currently in use in Vienna, of which 475,000 are decentralized and 460,000 include cooking gas appliances. These figures illustrate the enormous challenge of eliminating fossil fuels for space heating by 2040, a measure that is absolutely necessary to establish Vienna as a pioneer in climate protection.
In recent decades, significant progress has been made in reducing CO₂ emissions in the building sector, which has been supported by various funding models and the expansion of district heating. Nevertheless, 30% of the greenhouse gas emissions relevant to the key target in Vienna can still be attributed to heating, cooling and hot water preparation, explains wien.gv.at.
The city has long-term plans to reduce CO₂ emissions to zero by 2040. In order to achieve this, the need for a clear legal framework for phasing out fossil heating systems is also emphasized. With the “Vienna Heat and Cooling 2040” program and concrete measures for thermal renovation, the switch to renewable energies is intended to be carried out in a socially just manner.
It is time as a city to take action and rethink. Vienna is ready for the energy transition, and initiatives such as “Mobile Out of Gas” are laying the foundation for a sustainable future that will not only benefit our buildings, but also our future generations. The people of Vienna are invited to actively participate in this climate change.
