Silvia Janković leaves office: the district's success story in review

Silvia Janković takes stock after five years as district leader in Margareten. On June 10, 2025, she will officially hand over her office to Michael Luxenberger from the Margaretner Greens. For Janković, who grew up in the 5th district and has lived here for 30 years, her term in office was a true “success story”. She looks back with pride on the numerous projects she initiated during her time.

One of the most significant achievements is the redesign of Reinprechtsdorfer Straße and the expansion of the bicycle-friendly infrastructure. The modernization of over 10,000 square meters of green spaces is also one of the highlights of her term in office. The visibility of women was particularly important to her: the naming of the Barbara Prammer Park and the Friederike Mayröcker Hof testify to her commitment to greater equality. But the kindergarten at Bacherplatz also benefited from a comprehensive renovation and expansion project.

Review of challenges and successes

During her time, Janković not only fought for a thriving neighborhood, but also faced challenges such as the Corona crisis, inflation and subway construction. Despite these difficulties, she feels supported by the district residents. “If she had won the election 100 percent,” said Janković, she sees herself as the favorite for another term in office due to the support of the population. However, she found the SPÖ's decision to nominate a new top candidate a serious blow.

Where does Janković go from here? Even if she will not take part in the local council or district council, she plans to remain politically active, especially in the SPÖ women's organization. Her goal remains to contribute her knowledge and experiences to Vienna in new ways and, above all, to continue working in the area of schools and education.

Sustainability and citizen participation

Janković is particularly concerned about improving educational opportunities for young people. Programs such as the Children and Youth Parliament promote democratic participation and the embedding of diversity in local communities. There are also initiatives to improve public space with the aim of making Margareten fit for the future in terms of climate adaptation and housing.

Other planned projects include the greening of Straußgasse and the redesign of Scheupark, which should make a valuable contribution to the quality of life of the residents. Despite the challenges, Janković looks to the future with confidence and hopes that her successor will continue her projects.
