Viennese lightning checks: Police powerful against drugs and alcohol!

Last weekend, more precisely from Friday to Sunday, the Vienna police carried out special priority checks in the Landstrasse district. The aim of this large-scale campaign was to check vehicle drivers to see whether they were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Not only were routine checks carried out, but the focus was also on road safety. Loud courier Not only the state traffic department, but also the city police commands of Landstrasse, Favoriten and Simmering were involved in the checks.

The officials were therefore given great support from a medical officer and a summary judge in order to carry out the checks comprehensively. The results of these controls are impressive. A total of 333 preliminary alcohol tests were carried out and 24 drivers had their driving licenses provisionally withdrawn. This shows that there is clearly a problem on Vienna's roads with drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Security measures and their consequences

The control measures were not limited to alcohol. Drug use has also been critically examined. A total of 31 people had to be brought before a medical officer for a clinical examination, while five vehicle drivers refused to be examined, which immediately led to corresponding reports. In this context, five cases of seized drugs were also registered. The high numbers of speeding violations were particularly noticeable - a total of 34 reports were made in this area.

As the data shows, the security authorities take various types of violations seriously: 99 executive mandates were issued for violating traffic rules alone. These include, among other things, violating the requirement to wear a seat belt, using a cell phone while driving and ignoring red lights. Five vehicles also had their license plates taken away due to imminent danger. In two cases the control pressure failed because the people concerned did not have a valid driving license.

Rules and regulations for tests

During such traffic stops, the police can order drug tests or alcohol tests if there is reasonable suspicion. Various testing methods such as urine, saliva and blood tests are used, with blood testing being the only method accepted as evidence in court. If the alcohol level is over 0.5 per mille, a blood sample is required. However, there is no tolerance limit for drugs on the road - any consumption is prohibited! The risk of a driver's license being revoked if the test is positive is very high. Even if you have a positive result in a drug test outside of a traffic stop, you must expect to be reported to the points authority.

It is not new that well-known drugs such as cannabis or other substances are becoming a problem on the streets. But even passive smoking can lead to positive drug test results. Another common source of errors in testing is application errors or cross-reactions with medications, which can affect the reliability of such tests in some cases. Regardless of the tests, the call for road safety remains - because ultimately it's about everyone getting to their destination safely.

Last but not least, it should be mentioned that further focal points and action days are planned in various districts of Vienna in the coming weeks in order to further increase road safety. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and how many drivers will continue to be caught driving under the influence of addictive substances.
