Corruption in Vienna: Indictment against Nevrivy and Mahrer legally binding!

A shadow over Vienna: The Economic and Corruption Public Prosecutor’s Office (WKStA) has now brought charges against several prominent personalities. Those affected include Ernst Nevrivy, the district boss of the Donaustadt and member of the SPÖ, as well as Karl Mahrer, the ex-head of the ÖVP Vienna and current local councilor. Mahrer's wife is also the focus of the investigation. The allegations are serious and include serious commercial fraud, breach of trust and bribery.

Nevrivy is accused of passing on information about a secret location for a Wiener Linien coach house extension to the Wienwert board of directors. This action resulted in enormous financial damage of around 850,000 euros for Wiener Linien. In return, Nevrivy received, among other things, VIP tickets to football games. In an additional aspect of the case, Mahrer's wife was accused of receiving 84,000 euros from the real estate company Wienwert for PR services - but without any corresponding consideration, which supports the charges against the couple.

Extensive indictment and legal force

The indictment has now become legally binding after an objection from former Wienwert boss Stefan Gruze was rejected. In total, the indictment includes eleven people and three associations, although the allegations are not only directed against Nevrivy and the Mahrers. Charges were also brought against the former managing directors Nikos Bakirzoglu and Wolfgang Sedelmayer. Gruze himself is accused of glossing over Wienwert's financial situation to investors and concealing the company's insolvency. This leads to the serious accusation of misleading investors by providing false information about the use of bond money.

The WKStA's investigations have been going on since 2017 and mainly revolve around damage to investors. Gruze is specifically accused of having set aside the company's assets and settling private debts, which made it significantly more difficult to satisfy creditors. The damage from these actions is estimated at almost 4 million euros.

The outcry among the population

The developments surrounding this case are causing a great stir in Vienna. Not only political circles are affected, the broader public is also following with interest the consequences that these serious allegations could have. A trial date before the Vienna Regional Court has not yet been set, but given the seriousness of the allegations, such an event is eagerly awaited.

The WKStA has visibly consolidated its approach and is rigorously pursuing traces of possible misconduct in the context of official business. For those affected and interested, it remains to be hoped that this will not only lead to clarification, but also that such machinations will be rigorously prevented in the future. The judiciary has also provided information on the Internet about the ongoing proceedings Justice.gv.at can be accessed.
