Vienna's indoor swimming pools closed: renovations will last until 2026!
Vienna's indoor swimming pools are currently undergoing extensive renovation work, which is significantly changing the offering for swimming enthusiasts. Currently, some facilities, including the popular Döblinger Bad, remain temporarily closed, while others, such as the Simmeringer Bad and the Floridsdorfer Bad, will soon reopen their doors. These measures are intended not only to modernize the bathrooms, but also to ensure barrier-free access for all users. The Döblinger Bad will be completely renovated by summer 2026, including roof renovation and the creation of barrier-free access. The Wiener Districtblatt also reports on the positive response to the current conditions of the pools, despite the restrictions caused by the closure.
A closer look at the upcoming renovations shows that numerous indoor swimming pools will be completely renovated, modernized and made accessible to everyone. The Jörgerbad in Hernals is being renovated, but has been delayed, meaning it will remain closed until school ends in 2026. The general renovation of the Hietzinger Bad is scheduled to begin in May 2026, with a planned reopening in the fall of the same year. The Floridsdorfer Bad, on the other hand, will reopen on October 7th, with the sauna department following in October and November. The Simmeringer Bad can look forward to an opening on October 28th with a new swimming and training hall. Despite these closures, the number of visitors to Vienna's indoor swimming pools has remained stable, which indicates that the population still enjoys swimming opportunities.
New swimming pool construction for Liesing
Another bright spot for Vienna's swimming enthusiasts is the large-scale project planned in the 23rd district. As part of the “Bathroom Construction Program 2030”, the Höpflerbad will be expanded to include a modern indoor swimming pool by 2027. The planning has already been completed and the draft plan for zoning will be presented to the Vienna City Council for approval next December. It is emphasized that this new swimming hall, which will include a multi-purpose pool suitable for competitions as well as teaching pools for schools and kindergartens, is primarily intended to meet the needs of the population in Atzgersdorf. The tender phase is scheduled to start in early 2025, with construction starting in fall 2025 and an opening planned for fall 2027.
The new developments show that the city of Vienna has a good hand when it comes to improving the leisure activities of its citizens. While some pools remain closed due to renovation, the outlook for future, expanded swimming offerings is more than promising. Whether in the Floridsdorfer Bad or in the new hall in Liesing – swimming in Vienna remains attractive and will soon get even better!
