Major fire in Vienna-Donaustadt: fire on balcony spreads!

In Vienna, a fire on Jedleseer Strasse in the 21st district caused a stir on Saturday. At 11:30 a.m. the Vienna fire department was called into action. The column of smoke, which was visible from afar, led to numerous emergency calls from the population, who were monitoring the situation with concern. A total of 27 emergency services with six vehicles were mobilized to fight the fire. The fire broke out on a balcony adjoining two apartments and quickly spread. Fortunately, the affected apartments were empty at the time of the fire and there was no one in adjacent areas. Luckily there were no injuries. The operation lasted until 1:00 p.m. The cause of the fire is currently unclear and is being investigated by the Vienna State Criminal Police Office. oe24 reports that….

But that's not the only alarm that has kept the fire department busy in the last few days. On Wednesday night there was another apartment fire in Vienna-Meidling, which also presented the fire department with major challenges. A total of 14 people, including six adults and eight children, had to be brought to safety using a turntable ladder. When the fire brigade arrived, two windows were already ablaze and many people were standing desperately at the building's windows. Two other people were able to be evacuated through the stairwell using escape filter masks. Fortunately, no one was uninjured in the fire and all evacuated people were able to return to their homes after being looked after by professional rescue services. The fire was quickly extinguished, but the affected apartment became uninhabitable and the staircase and other apartments also suffered damage. The cause of the fire was attributed to a technical defect when charging an electric scooter. Here too, support was organized by the City of Vienna to provide replacement accommodation for the temporarily homeless. Vienna provides information about….

In view of these events, the danger of house fires in the city is becoming increasingly clear. In the last three months, 17 fire victims have already been counted in Vienna, as the KFV reports. On average, around 30 people die in house fires every year. Dr. Armin Kaltenegger, head of property protection at KFV, notes that most fires occur during the cold months. Open fire or electrical devices combined with human error are common causes of fires. The KFV therefore urgently recommends safety measures: open fires should never be left unattended, electrical appliances should be serviced regularly and smoke alarms should be installed in all common rooms (except the kitchen). These can be life-saving in an emergency. However, a survey shows that many households are inadequately prepared for the risk of fire - 83 percent of those surveyed know the fire department's emergency number, but one in six are unsure. KFV informs about....

Vienna would do well to remain vigilant and take appropriate preventive measures. It remains to be hoped that such incidents can be prevented in the future; anything else would be negligent.
