Mysterious death: Nurse in Favoriten suspected – irregularities discovered!

At the Favoriten clinic in Vienna, the focus is on investigations against a former nurse on suspicion of murder. Despite the serious allegations, the accused nurse is still at large. As the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office, represented by spokeswoman Nina Bussek, confirmed, the autopsy results of a deceased patient are still pending and will take some time. This waiting loop creates additional tension and uncertainty in the case.

A second death, which is also being investigated at the clinic, could show connections. This patient also received palliative care and died in January 2025. The two deceased people, whose ages were between 50 and 70 years, received benzodiazepines and opiates. Irregularities were discovered in the nursing documentation after the patient's death in mid-September. Both patients received these medications via a motorized syringe, but not all doses were properly documented.

Suspicious colleague and internal audit

However, the investigation is not limited to the main suspect. A colleague who was on duty at the same time as the accused nurse is also listed as a suspect, but not as the accused. The Vienna Care and Patient Advocate (WPPA) has already examined the incidents and emphasized that no previous complaints or abnormalities were known about the main accused. The fact that nursing staff immediately reported the incidents to the ward management shows that there was a certain sense of responsibility.

The situation at the clinic has upset many people in the area. The public discussion about safety in nursing facilities and the responsibility of nursing staff has been reignited. In view of the two serious deaths, many relatives are unsettled and ask themselves how such dramatic events can occur.

Outlook and further investigations

The investigation is far from over. The exact circumstances that led to the deaths continue to be closely examined. The fate of the accused nurse is also in the room, as is the question of the processes in the Favoriten clinic. It remains to be seen whether the internal audits that have already been carried out are sufficient to regain the trust of patients and their relatives.

The case will therefore continue to cause a stir and gives rise to patient consideration as to how patient safety in care facilities can be improved in the future. It is hoped that the coming results will provide clarity and help prevent similar incidents from happening again.
