Scary surprise in the community building: Halloween in favorites thrilled!
It's that time again - Halloween will be celebrated all over Austria on October 31st! This custom, which has its roots in ancient Celtic harvest festivals, brings a lot of joy and horror in Vienna. In recent years, the city has become a hotspot for Halloween fans, which is also reflected in the preparations in the districts. A special highlight can be found in Vienna-Favoriten, where residents decorate extremely creatively.
In the courtyard of a community building, an impressive Halloween decoration catches the eye. Numerous scary figures, spider webs and other scary elements were set up on a green area. A reader reporter who discovered the decoration shared his impressions via video. The impressive decorative elements, including scary dolls, colorful LED light chains, witches and skeletons, make the scenery particularly inviting for the youngest children. A glowing cauldron with green slime completes the picture and ensures that the children enjoy being spooked. A caretaker installed these artistic representations over several meters, creating a truly sophisticated ambience that not only delights children but also many adults.
Creepy Vienna
But Vienna has much more to offer than just atmospheric decorations. With the spookiest places in the city, Vienna captivates many people during Halloween. The large amusement parks, such as the Prater, offer exciting ghost trains with witches and monsters. Pure adrenaline is on offer here – be it the “Black Mamba” or “Magic Rotor” rides. There will also be a big Halloween parade on October 31st starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Prater.
Also on the program are mysterious places such as the Fool's Tower with its extraordinary collection of pathological-anatomical exhibits or the Central Cemetery, which exudes a very special atmosphere when it is foggy. A mystery rally that takes you through haunted spots in the city promises an unforgettable Halloween adventure for the whole family. The culinary delights are in cafés like Diglas, where traditional pastries await guests like bonfires.
The origins and traditions
The origins of Halloween are deeply rooted in Celtic culture, particularly the festival of Samhain, celebrated on one of the last days of October. Traditionally, people believed that during this time the souls of the deceased could return to Earth. To protect themselves from evil spirits, people dressed up and offered food. Even today, a lot of sweets are distributed on Halloween - in the USA, around a quarter of the sweets sold every year are sold for this occasion! This shows that traditions have undergone changes over the years, but respect for ancestors and the joy of celebration remain.
The biblical perspective on Halloween is also interesting because although it is not explicitly mentioned, there are numerous reflections on the celebration. There is debate in many Christian circles as to whether the connection to the dark origins of Halloween is still acceptable or whether a focus should be placed on the positive aspects of the festival. No matter how you feel about these issues, for most Viennese Halloween remains a time full of fun and communal activities – and more than just a reason to get scared.
Whether you admire the colorful lights and scary characters in the municipal buildings in Favoriten or enjoy the exciting goings-on in the Prater, one thing is certain: Halloween in Vienna offers something for everyone and will make your heart beat faster!
