Guessed burglars: Angry letter in Mercdes causes laughter!

There is news from the 10th district that shows how creatively those affected can react to break-ins. On Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., a black Mercedes ML was discovered in Erlachgasse with an unusual message on its broken side window. A passerby noticed the vehicle and reported that the window read: "Libe Zapzarapper, you f***ed my glass twice. Trunk empty." The remarkable message not only reflects frustration, but also brings smiles among residents. The indication of an empty trunk suggests that there is nothing left to steal after the driver has apparently fallen victim to burglars for the second time. This type of message could serve as encouragement for other affected people who are also annoyed by the increase in burglaries in Vienna. According to Heute, teenage gangs in particular are active and have been unsettling the city recently.

But the situation is not only bizarre, but also alarming. In 2024, the number of burglaries will have increased more than they have in years. As a report from Vienna shows, 32,966 burglaries alone were registered. A worrying increase of 4.7% compared to last year. This unpleasant trend is partly due to increased youth crime. Statistics show that the number of suspected young people under the age of 18 exploded from 2010 to 2024, from 8,360 to 14,804.

Insights into police work

The police have already responded to this worrying situation and busted a serial burglary gang in Vienna and Lower Austria. In an article published at the end of January by MeinBezirk it is explained that several suspects who have been up to mischief in various districts of Vienna in recent months have been arrested. The increase in car break-ins almost doubled from 2,182 to 4,909. The police receive support from an interdisciplinary working group that was set up specifically for child and youth crime in order to better counteract this development.

The statistics speak for themselves: Police reports in Vienna rose from 186,475 in 2023 to 194,981 in 2024. This means that the number of suspects identified has reached a high in two decades, which is putting additional pressure on the city. The clearance rate also fell from 44.3% to 43.4%, which means that not only is the number of crimes increasing, but solving these crimes is also becoming increasingly difficult.

So what can affected citizens do? It remains to be hoped that the police's latest measures will have an effect and crime in Vienna can be reduced to a tolerable level again. Until then, the Viennese are still required to remain vigilant and to notify the authorities immediately in the event of suspicion or a break-in.
