A23 exit Favoriten: Nightly closures until December 2025!
The A23 Südosttangente, Austria's busiest road with an average of 180,000 vehicles per day, will be used for important renovation work in the coming months. The exit towards Favoriten, which is used by around 164,100 vehicles every day, is particularly affected. From July 21, 2025, ASFINAG will start comprehensive work on the renovation of a retaining wall in the direction of Altmannsdorf, like Today reported.
The work begins with a two-week demolition phase in which the old wall facing is removed. The reconstruction then takes place, during which the retaining wall receives a new concrete protective shell and an upper finish. This renewal is of great importance to ensure long-term stability of the tangent and to extend the life of the structure through weatherproof materials. All lanes remain available during the day, making use easier for commuters and those traveling through.
Night closures until December
However, the renovation work is not without restrictions for road users: at night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the roadway will be narrowed to one lane. The exit from the Kaisermühlen junction to the distribution circuit will be completely blocked during this time. These night closures, which will last until the planned completion in December 2025, are necessary to ensure traffic safety and the smooth progress of construction work NOP.
Austria has a well-developed infrastructure with around 127,000 km of roads. Nevertheless, the share for road construction, maintenance and operation is significant, and around 10% of the municipal budget goes to these areas annually. In the future, the focus must be placed more on multimodal transport solutions, which include, among other things, structures for cycle paths and better access to public transport. Vision Austria points out that the expansion of cycle highways is particularly important in order to motivate the population to switch from cars to bicycles.
The renovation work on the A23 shows how important it is to maintain existing infrastructure sustainably and at the same time to make the rapidly increasing traffic safe. With a good hand from the authorities, we can hope for a functioning transport infrastructure that meets both the needs of the population and ecological requirements.
