Shattered dreams: JJ and the broken ESC cup in Vienna!

The “Star Night at Lake Neusiedl” on June 7, 2025 was not only a musical highlight, but also became the scene of an unexpected trophy breakdown. The aspiring singer JJ, real name Johannes Pietsch, who recently won the Eurovision Song Contest with his entry “Wasted Love”, spoke to presenter Barbara Schöneberger about his ESC trophy, which has already had a few injuries behind it. How Today Reportedly, the trophy arrived broken “in the middle” after the return journey to Vienna. This embarrassment dates back to a transport mishap when a suitcase was damaged during the trip.

JJ said the cup had already broken twice, raising suspicions that it was "poorly glued or poorly constructed." The situation eventually escalated during the event when Schöneberger presented him with a replacement trophy. During a live test, this trophy also fell and broke as well. Luckily, JJ took the incident with humor and tried to put the pieces back together. “Not everything always goes according to plan,” smiled the 24-year-old from Vienna.

A rising star

JJ, who grew up in Dubai and studies at the University of Music and Art in Vienna, has already made a name for himself in the music industry. Active since 2020, he took part in “The Voice UK” and reached the Knockouts with prominent support from will.i.am. In 2021 he competed in “Starmania” and made it to the finals.

His big breakthrough came with the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, where he scored 436 points with his emotional song “Wasted Love” - an impressive number that comes from a combination of jury and televoter votes. He is also the first Eurovision winner with Southeast Asian roots, which makes his origins even more remarkable. In addition to his musical talent, JJ is fluent in several languages including German, English, French and Tagalog.

Personal notes

JJ also recently publicly expressed his disappointment with Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. He called for the next edition to be held in Vienna without Israel. Nevertheless, the young artist received a warm welcome for his performance when he returned to Austria, which shows that he is very popular in the local music scene.

Music is more than just a job for JJ; it combines pop melodies with operatic sounds. As a soprano, he has a unique style that captivates the audience. And even though his trophy arrived a bit disheveled, JJ is sure to have many more successes to come - with or without trophies.
