Viennese demonstrations on June 7th: Solidarity with Palestinians and commemoration of Srebrenica
On Saturday, June 7, 2025, Vienna will be the stage for two important demonstrations. The first voices were raised in advance to draw attention to the concerns that wanted to be heard in the federal capital.
The first demonstration, which has the motto “Solidarity with the Palestinian people,” begins at 4:30 p.m. at Yppenplatz in the 16th district. Around 300 participants are expected to take their route via Schellhammergasse, the Outer Belt to Urban-Loritz-Platz. Temporary closures and diversions are planned for the flow of traffic in the area of the demonstration, especially on the Outer Hernals Belt from Jörgerstrasse, such as OEMTC reported.
An important signal for justice
This action comes amid Israel Apartheid Week (IAW), which was launched to mark the 20th anniversary of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The focus is on strengthening resistance to Israel's apartheid regime and highlighting the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, where 2.3 million Palestinians are severely disadvantaged. Initiators like BDS Austria invite everyone who wants to stand up against injustice to show solidarity and hope for broad participation in this important event Palestine solidarity is to be read.
In parallel, the second important event will take place on the same day. Under the motto “Commemoration of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide”, around 3,000 people will gather at Christian-Broda-Platz in the 6th district from 4:30 p.m. This memorial event is intended to commemorate the victims of the Srebrenica massacre, in which over 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were killed in 1995. The route leads, among other things, via Mariahilfer Straße, Babenbergerstraße and finally leads via the Ringstraße to Maria Theresien-Platz, although traffic restrictions are also to be expected, especially on the two line and around the ring, as is also the case OEMTC reported.
World memory of the genocide
This commemoration takes place against the background of the recently decided UN Day of Remembrance for the Srebrenica Massacre, which will be established on July 11th. The resolution was adopted by 84 states and emphasizes the importance of not accepting genocide denial. Serbia's government criticizes the resolution as divisive, while other voices point out that the legal classification of genocide has been repeatedly reiterated by the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, according to a report daily news can be read.
A day full of remembrance, solidarity and activism awaits Vienna. The organizers and participants of both demos hope for active participation and that their messages will be heard far beyond the city's borders.
