Wien Energie strengthens its green course: New wind and solar parks for 900,000 households!
In a significant development for Vienna’s green energy future, Wien Energie has acquired the company “Im Wind”. With this takeover, the city not only purchased 52 wind turbines and four large photovoltaic systems, but also set the course for the capital's future energy supply. The purchase was approved by the competition authority and brings Vienna's total to 526 photovoltaic systems, 145 wind turbines and 26 hydroelectric power plants, which has increased the total output to an impressive 800 megawatts. This corresponds to the electricity needs of 900,000 average households in Vienna courier reported.
But Wien Energie's ambitions go even further: by 2030, the output is to be increased to up to 1,800 megawatts in order to supply all Viennese households with green electricity. By 2040, the company even plans to add another 100 locations to reach 2,800 megawatts and supply the entire Vienna transport sector with renewable electricity. These ambitious plans are intended not only to improve the environment, but also to provide economic stimulus and increase dependence on gas supplies. Finally, Peter Weinelt, General Director of Wiener Stadtwerke, expressed concerns about gas supplies after the Russian attack on Ukraine.
Integration of employees and future prospects
With the acquisition of “Im Wind”, Wien Energie also took on 100 employees who were seamlessly integrated into Wiener Stadtwerke. While the company remains independent, the new employees can look forward to an exciting future in the growing renewable energy industry. “Im Wind” also brings with it numerous approved projects that are to be realized in the coming years, which strengthens Vienna’s position as a pioneer in sustainable energy production.
Another interesting aspect of the takeover is the confidentially agreed amount of the purchase costs. For Wien Energie, however, this step is more than just a financial investment; it represents an important part of the strategy to gradually replace gas-fired power plants with renewable energies, even if the company cannot do without fossil fuels at the moment.
