Traffic chaos threatens: traffic jams in Austria due to holidays and events!

Next weekend, Vienna and all of Austria are facing real traffic chaos. The reason for this is several events that will fill the streets this weekend. How aviation.direct reports, the summer holidays are beginning in North Rhine-Westphalia and parts of the Netherlands, the Wachau cycling marathon is also attracting many sports enthusiasts and Robbie Williams' appearance in Vienna will particularly cause a lot of traffic.

The ÖAMTC is already warning of significant delays that are to be expected, especially on the north-south connections. There will be a lot of traffic, especially on the main traffic axes, so travelers are well advised to plan their travel times generously. The main traffic arteries that will be significantly affected include the Westautobahn (A1), the Südautobahn (A2), the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9) and the Tauernautobahn (A10).

Traffic forecast for the main traffic axes

  • A1 – Westautobahn: Staus im Großraum Salzburg, besonders in Thalgau.
  • A2 – Südautobahn: Verzögerungen zwischen Sinabelkirchen und Gleisdorf wegen Baustellen.
  • A9 – Pyhrn Autobahn: Engpässe an den Mautstellen Bosruck- und Gleinalmtunnel sowie Baustellen Kalwang-Mautern.
  • A10 – Tauernautobahn: Hohe Belastungen im Raum Salzburg, insbesondere vor Mautstelle St. Michael.
  • A11 – Karawankenautobahn: Stark frequentiert vor dem Karawankentunnel.
  • A12 – Inntalautobahn: Hoher Verkehr im Großraum Innsbruck.
  • A13 – Brennerautobahn: Verkehrsbehinderungen zwischen Innsbruck und Mautstelle Schönberg.
  • A23 – Südosttangente in Wien: Starkes Verkehrsaufkommen in beide Richtungen.
  • B179 – Fernpassstraße: Verkehrsdichte zwischen Füssen in Bayern und Nassereith.

Special events contribute to traffic congestion. The Wachau cycling marathon will take place on Sunday, July 13th and will probably lead to traffic disruptions on the federal highways B3 and B33 in the Wachau. On Saturday July 12th, Robbie Williams' concert will result in additional delays on the Südosttangente (A23), particularly from the afternoon hours onwards.

Public transport is recommended

In view of this increased traffic congestion, the ÖAMTC recommends that all concert goers leave their cars behind and switch to public transport. It turns out that in times like these, a good hand when traveling can be crucial.

The summer travel season is already showing its first signs: According to a balance sheet from the ÖAMTC, there were a total of 572 traffic jams on weekends in the summer of 2024. This represents an increase of 6.52% compared to the previous year. The main transit routes were particularly affected by traffic jams, but car-driving travelers were largely spared from permanent bottlenecks in the road network OTS reported.

The most well-known causes of traffic jams are still traffic congestion at 36.54%, followed by construction sites. It is therefore important to take appropriate precautions for the coming days in order to enjoy a stress-free start to your summer holidays.

Overall, one thing remains clear: those who plan well and regularly obtain current traffic information have the best chance of escaping the impending weekend traffic jams and getting to their destination on time.
