Education about cancer: Exclusive insights into the Cancer School Vienna!
In Vienna, the focus is on education about cancer: The Cancer School of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) Vienna, a cooperation between MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital, aims to provide patients and their relatives with comprehensive information about cancer and to strengthen personal contacts with experts. The event takes place regularly and offers a unique insight into areas of oncology that are otherwise not open to the public. Participants can visit the university clinic for radiation oncology and the hospital pharmacy, which focuses on the production of cytostatics and immunotherapeutics.
The management team under the leadership of Gabriela Kornek, the medical director of the AKH Vienna, has put together an exciting program. Seminars on the most common cancer-prostate, breast, intestinal and lung cancer-are part of this offer. Exclusive tours were planned as an additional highlight: On October 7, 2025 at 5:30 p.m., the University Clinic for Radio -oncology opens its doors, followed by further appointments in February and May 2026.
Dates and content of the seminars
In this way, those interested can better understand the various types of cancer and learn how they can be counteracted through monitoring and early detection. Talking to experts in person will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the knowledge and attitudes of the participants. The seminars are scheduled for:
- 4. November 2025: Lungenkrebs
- 2. Dezember 2025: Brustkrebs
- 25. März 2026: Darmkrebs
- 2. Juni 2026: Prostatakrebs
Provision and vaccination in focus
Another important part of the health education is the coming pension day, which will take place on February 15, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Van Swieten Saal. This day is devoted to topics such as early detection and clarification of the HPV vaccination, which can prevent six different types of cancer. Particularly noteworthy is the free vaccination offer for everyone up to 30 years that can be used without registration - an excellent example of proactive health promotion in the city.
The event is accompanied by various lectures in which experts from MedUni Vienna pursue central topics such as the warning signals of cancer and the importance of regular check -ups. Lectures on topics such as "colon cancer early detection" or "skin cancer - precaution and early detection" are also on the program. The day is finally rounded off with an HPV special, which is led by the well-known moderator Sophie Drescher.
Enlightenment via HPV
Particular attention is paid to the sensitization for cervical cancer in January, which is almost completely caused by human papilloma viruses (HPV). It is estimated that 85 to 90 percent of all sexually active people are infected with HPV over the course of their lives. Therefore, regular check -ups and vaccinations are crucial means to minimize the risk of this disease. HPV vaccination lowers the risk of genital warts and cervical cancer by up to 90 percent, which makes it an essential measure in cancer prevention.
The Cancer School and the ongoing reconnaissance campaigns are a step in the right direction to spread knowledge and further anchor cancer.
