Ceremonial opening of the Gersthof educational campus: A new glimmer of hope!

In Vienna-Gersthof, part of the history has been recycled: the former location of the orthopedic hospital at Wielemansgasse 28 shines as a new educational campus after extensive renovation. The official opening took place in the festive setting of a garden party, attended by high-ranking representatives of the Federal Real Estate Company (BIG) as well as district leaders Silvia Nossek (Greens) and Peter Jagsch (SPÖ).

The hospital, which closed its doors in 2019, was acquired by BIG in 2020 with the express requirement to build a school site. Great praise goes to those responsible for successfully mastering all the monument protection challenges. These were tackled in close cooperation with the Federal Monuments Office and the Austrian Institute for School and Sports Facility Construction (ÖISS). With 23 regular classes as well as special classrooms and spacious open spaces, the new campus offers everything the heart of the educational world desires.

Flexible teaching landscapes

A central focus in the planning was to support all-day operation and to set up additional learning zones that enable flexible use of the classrooms. The facade of the charming building remains unchanged, while many historical features inside have been carefully preserved. The building was built according to the highest standards of climate-active construction, which gives it a modern and sustainable character.

The campus is currently acting as alternative accommodation for BG18 Klostergasse, which is currently being renovated. Many people present at the opening were optimistic that the site would remain a public school even after it was used as alternative accommodation. However, it remains unclear who exactly will take responsibility for the campus in the future.

New building and sports facilities

In the south of the educational campus, work is also underway on two sports pavilions, which are scheduled for completion in summer 2024. BIG is investing around 6 million euros in these new sports facilities, which offer, among other things, a gym and an exercise room. These should not only be available to the students, but also to external clubs.

The sports pavilions are designed as a structural wooden structure with a larch wood facade and a photovoltaic system. Great importance is therefore placed on sustainability and resource conservation here too. The campus will also offer a comprehensive range of sports, including a ball sports field and playground equipment in the park. Immofocus summarizes that this infrastructure will benefit around 660 students.

Further plans are already in the works for the future development of the educational campus. A new 15-story high-rise building is currently being built, which will have a gross floor area of 19,700 square meters. This innovative building will be used by, among others, the DHBW Heilbronn and the DHBW CAS. The extensive greening and sustainable orientation should also be emphasized here, as is the case Dieter Schwarz Foundation reported.

Overall, it is clear that the Gersthof educational campus is not only a new place for education, but also an example of successful construction in harmony with history and the environment. There will certainly be a lot more exciting information about the history of the location to come!
