Vienna relies on hydrogen: 10 electric buses start in September!

Things will soon be greener in Vienna! From September 2025, ten new hydrogen e-buses will be used on lines 2A and 3A. These innovative buses offer a refreshing alternative to classic diesel buses and not only score points with the latest technology, but also with environmentally friendly efficiency. My district reports that the buses generate electricity from hydrogen and therefore do not produce harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxides or particulate matter.

The hydrogen supply is provided by Wien Energie, and this hydrogen is produced from renewable energy sources. This not only promises clean mobility, but also a significant step towards sustainable public transport in the federal capital. The buses will be refueled at the Wiener Netze campus, where a special H2 filling station and charging station will be set up.

Technical details and investments

The new hydrogen buses come from the Italian manufacturer “Rampini” and have already been extensively tested. A 230 kW electric motor is powered by a 170 kWh battery and a hydrogen fuel cell, extending the range of the vehicles and reducing the need for charging. This is particularly advantageous for Wiener Linien, which will reduce its vehicle fleet from twelve to ten buses. VOL highlights that the total investment in the new models is around twelve million euros and that both Wiener Linien, the Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure and the EU are involved.

Another plus point: the new buses are fully air-conditioned, which offers passengers additional comfort. With around 60 electric buses already in use, the Wiener Linien fleet is being further modernized and taken to the next level.

A step into the future

This development is not only a technical advance, but also a clear commitment to environmentally friendly mobility in Vienna. The city is taking an important step into the future and showing that sustainable public transport is possible. Various voices from politics and associations are in favor of this change, which could significantly relieve the burden on the transport sector. ORF Vienna also reports on the potential of these hydrogen buses and their positive effects on air quality in the city.

With these new hydrogen e-buses, Vienna shows that innovative approaches to public transport are not only feasible, but also necessary to meet the challenges of the future in the field of mobility.
