Vienna relies on flourishing tranquility: new meadow cemeteries for eco-burials

Vienna is setting new trends in the area of funeral culture. From spring 2026, the deceased can find their final resting place in the form of flower meadow graves in a newly designed urn cemetery in Simmering. This innovative concept combines respect for the deceased with a deep connection to nature. The city offers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional forms of burial that is becoming increasingly popular. How vecerni-praha.cz According to reports, a flower landscape is being created in the 11th district, which is intended to symbolize the circle of life.

The cemetery landscape will be expanded with up to 890 new graves. These meadow burials are part of a long-term initiative aimed at promoting nature in urban environments. Biodegradable urns, which decompose over time, make this form of burial particularly sustainable. The graves are laid out in the shape of flower petals and decorated with selected plants to celebrate the ever-changing appearance of the flora.

Unique forms of burial in Vienna

Viennese cemeteries already offer a wide range of natural burial options. How friedhoefewien.at explains, forest, tree and shrub burials as well as urn gardens that are broken down by rainwater are part of the offer. This ecological focus already appeals to many people, as around 40% of burials in Vienna today take place in the form of urn burials.

Particularly striking is the natural cemetery at the Vienna Central Cemetery, which is unique in Europe. Here, ecological coffins without metal or synthetic parts are allowed, even without prior cremation. The concept “Back to nature, back with the Bim” reflects the philosophy that ecological responsibility plays a central role in the planning and design of cemeteries.

Nature as a retreat

The new flower meadow graves will not only be places of farewell, but also oases of peace and nature for all Viennese citizens. The aspect of closeness to nature is essential: the plants on the graves symbolize transience and the renewal of life, which is particularly important in today's fast-moving times.

A total of around 66,000 m² is already available for natural graves in Vienna's cemeteries. The joy of natural burial options is finding increasing approval among the population. This development represents a step in the right direction to give new meaning to urban cemeteries and offer people a place for reflection and peace.

In this sense, the “Cemetery Urban Gardening” initiative is becoming increasingly popular and contributes to raising awareness about the ecological responsibility of each individual.
