Vienna expects tram world championship: 50,000 visitors at the showdown!
An exciting event is coming! On Saturday, September 13th, the first Tram World Championship will take place directly in front of the magnificent Vienna City Hall. This event is organized by the Wiener Linien and promises not only exciting competitions, but also a great supporting program for all visitors.
A total of 25 driver teams will take to the tram on this day to demonstrate their skills. The local Viennese heroes Elisabeth Urbanitsch and Florijan Isak Vienna will be represented. Both have already trained intensively in the main workshop in Simmering in order to be well prepared for the various disciplines.
A strong duo
Elisabeth Urbanitsch, who has been working as a career changer at Wiener Linien since 2019, emphasizes the importance of teamwork. “Reversing is a challenge that requires precise communication and complete trust,” she explains. Your colleague, Florijan Isak, can already look back on over 10 years of experience in tram driving. The two drivers particularly focused on four of the eight disciplines scheduled for the competition. This includes reversing, lateral clearance, target braking and the exact stop at door 2.
Also spectacular are the show elements that can be expected as part of the World Cup, such as tram bowling and tram curling. This mix of precision and entertainment makes the event an absolute highlight for the entire city.
A celebration for everyone
More than 50,000 visitors are expected on site who can follow the exciting competitions live. In addition, there will be many international viewers who will be there via live stream. A fan zone will also be set up in which the Wiener Linien will present their services. In addition to food stalls, a children's program is also offered to appeal to families and create a great ambience.
Vienna's public transport city councilor Ulli Sima emphasizes how important this event is for public transport and mobility in the city: "It is a great opportunity to present the Wiener Linien and its employees and at the same time underline the importance of trams for Vienna."
Elisabeth Urbanitsch is particularly looking forward to the exchange with international colleagues: “This is not just a competition venue, but also an opportunity to learn from each other and discover the different cultures in the field of tram driving.”
With such an exciting event in September, the Viennese can already look forward to an unforgettable experience. So, join us and cheer on our team – the Tram World Championship is sure to be an event not to be missed.
