Fear of homeless people – parents demand measures in Simmering!
Directly at the U3 terminus in Simmering, a newly built homeless quarter is causing quite a stir among residents. The situation couldn't be more critical: directly in front of a community building and on the daily way to school for many children, both parents and neighbors report their great concerns about the conditions there. The homeless camps are located practically at the entrance to Hasenleitengasse and raise concerns among residents about the safety of their families.
Particularly alarming are reports of sightings of “unmade beds” and homeless people sleeping in sleeping bags or on cardboard boxes. This also made politicians take notice. FPÖ local councilor Paul Stadler and district councilor Wolfgang Kieslich visited the location and were visibly shocked when they saw the conditions. “Urgent action must be taken here,” said Stadler, who also suspects that these are often migrants who live illegally in Austria.
Fear among residents
The fears of mothers in the area are entirely understandable. For children in particular, the route to school is now considered less safe, which puts parents on high alert. A caretaker reported fear and frequent calls to the police due to the tense situation. Although the city of Vienna is concerned and assures that it is keeping a close eye on the situation, many residents still feel left alone.
The city's social workers and the Vienna Homeless Help Center are already working on site. However, it remains to be seen whether further measures are necessary. The Simmering Police Department has announced that it will carry out additional patrols to ensure safety in public spaces, especially now that the cold season is just around the corner.
Demands for solutions
The situation surrounding the homeless quarters illustrates the urgent need for suitable accommodation for homeless people in Vienna. In the city, the focus is not only on security issues, but also on the humane accommodation of this often neglected group of people. The residents hope that the city government will take clear and quick measures that take into account both the safety of the people in the district and the needs of the homeless themselves.
All in all, it is clear that a certain area of tension is emerging here, which brings with it both social and security policy challenges. Simmering residents are demanding that their elected officials address the issues immediately to ensure a safe and livable environment for everyone.
