Vienna under terror: fifth armed attack in just three weeks!

In the early morning hours of August 13, 2025, there was an armed robbery at a gas station in Vienna. As the crown Reportedly, two masked men appeared, with one threatening employees with a gun and demanding cash while his accomplice stood outside. The exact amount of the loot is still unclear. This incident marks the fifth robbery in just three weeks in the city, increasing concerns about rising crime in Vienna.

The perpetrators' strategy appears to have a pattern that has already been evident in previous attacks. Similar attacks took place on August 2nd in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and on July 25th in Favoriten, in which two perpetrators also took part. There were also armed lone perpetrator robberies on July 19th and 23rd, which triggered further alarm. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office is currently examining whether there is a connection between these crimes. While the search for those responsible has so far been unsuccessful, information can be submitted anonymously at 01/31310-33800.

Increase in crime in Vienna

The situation in Vienna is alarming. According to a report by vienna.at, crime increased overall in 2024, particularly in terms of violent crimes and robberies in public places. The number of robberies increased from 1,180 in 2023 to 1,394 in 2024 - an increase of 18.1 percent. This is particularly notable in a city long considered safe.

In this context, the increase in juvenile crime is alarming. The number of suspicious people under the age of 18 rose from 8,360 in 2010 to 14,804 in 2024. The 10 to 14 year old age group in particular makes headlines with over 30 percent of juvenile crimes. The increase in ineffective measures does not go unnoticed and has resulted in the establishment of an interdisciplinary working group on child and juvenile crime.

Security situation and future prospects

All of these developments raise questions about security in Vienna. While the total number of police reports increased by 4.6 percent from 186,475 (2023) to 194,981 (2024), the clearance rate fell from 44.3 to 43.4 percent. It remains to be seen how the city administration and police will respond to these worrying trends.

The constant increase in violent crimes, such as an increase in physical injuries from 15,566 to 16,268 and rapes from 468 to 519, shows that there is a need for action. While the Viennese were hoping for a quieter city life, current events and statistics seem to make it clear that the challenges in internal security cannot be underestimated. The city is therefore faced with the urgent task of taking preventive measures as well as addressing the immediate security concerns of its citizens.
