Construction work at U4: Partial closure in Vienna causes detours!

From today, September 22nd, 2025, the U4 station Landstraße-Wien Mitte will be the focus of construction work that will affect passengers until November 2nd. With the beginning of astronomical autumn, Wiener Linien announces a partial closure in the direction of Heiligenstadt. During this time, the trains will not stop at the stop but will pass directly through. However, passengers can continue to the Schwedenplatz station and change there to go in the opposite direction, as 5min.at reports.

After six weeks of intensive work, those responsible will renew the floor covering, specifically replacing asphalt with a new, light granite floor. In addition, the tactile floor information system is due to be modernized, which is of great importance for visually impaired people. This not only increases the comfort but also the safety of the passengers, as Der Standard confirms.

Impact on regular services

But it's not just the U4 that is affected! From November 3rd, the U4 in the direction of Hütteldorf will also be closed until December 4th. Furthermore, the U6 and tram lines are under the sign of the construction sites: between Jägerstraße and Spittelau, the U6 will only run to a limited extent from October 27th to November 3rd, while bus lines such as the 37A and tram line 12 will have to operate at frequent intervals and also at night on weekends in order to offer passengers alternative options.

A small note for all users of tram line 5: It will only be operated between Praterstern and Josefstädter Straße from September 15th to 30th, as track construction work is being carried out in Blindengasse in the 8th district. Line 49 is also affected, as track replacements are necessary in the Hütteldorf and Bujattigasse area from October 27th up to and including November 7th.

A look at future improvements

The current maintenance work is part of a larger plan to modernize and expand the public transport network in Vienna. This work is necessary to keep the public transport network efficient and to offer better mobility solutions for the coming decades. As can be read on the Wiener Linien website, many of these major construction projects are being carried out in collaboration with other City of Vienna services, which promises long-term improvements for all passengers. However, care must always be taken to ensure that short-term restrictions are kept as low as possible.

Informed passengers are key! Current information about timetables and construction sites can be found on the official Wiener Linien websites and other information platforms.
