MHP takes over Hotel Savoyen: Vienna gets new Sheraton!

A lot is happening in the Vienna hotel industry: MHP Hotel AG has announced the takeover of the Hotel Savoyen Vienna, which will be re-presented under the Sheraton brand from the beginning of 2027. The hotel is currently operated by Verkehrsbüro Hospitality under the Austria Trend Hotels brand. This historic building, which once housed the Austro-Hungarian Empire Court and State Printing House, offers a total of 310 rooms - including 197 double rooms, 43 suites and 70 executive rooms - and, after extensive modernization, is intended to specifically appeal to business and conference guests. MHP sees great potential in the repositioning of the hotel, which is located in the city's embassy district, and plans to use the heart of the hotel, an event hall measuring more than 1,000 square meters, for international congresses and events. Hotelvor9 reports that the owner, Mechelgasse 1 GmbH, has agreed to a long-term collaboration with MHP.

What makes MHP so special? The hotel group was founded in 2012 and currently operates eleven hotels under international brands in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. MHP is already represented in Vienna with Le Méridien and Mooons. Sales of around 180 million euros are expected for the current financial year. MHP has also concluded a franchise agreement with Marriott International, which underpins the strategic cooperation. The hotel group has a good knack for developing high-quality operator concepts for premium hotels and is proving to be an innovative partner in the industry, supported by IBCOL Real Estate. Top hotel adds that the architectural concept comes from BWM Designers & Architects.

Marriott's expansion

The acquisition comes as part of Marriott International's expansion plans in Europe, which include adding nearly 100 hotels and over 12,000 rooms by the end of 2026. Satya Anand, President Europe, Middle East & Africa, emphasizes that the growth potential through conversions is particularly great. Especially since Marriott already has over 800 hotels with almost 150,000 rooms in 47 countries in Europe. The integration of existing properties into the Marriott portfolio also brings guests benefits such as the well-known Marriott Bonvoy bonus program. Marriott is keeping an eye on increasing demand in countries such as Italy, the UK, Spain and Turkey.

A further look at market trends shows that MHP is well prepared with the repositioning of the Savoyen Vienna as part of the Marriott strategy, especially with the introduction of the new midscale brand Four Points Express by Sheraton, which represents conversion-proven opportunities in Europe. These strategic moves not only increase the variety on offer, but also increase competition in the Vienna hotel landscape. The Viennese can be curious to see how the Hotel Savoyen Vienna will develop in the coming years.
