New living space: Stumpergasse becomes a green oasis in Mariahilf!

Something is happening in Mariahilf! At the construction site in Stumpergasse between house numbers 13 and 17, greening of the streetscape is being progressed. Ten new trees and six standard shrubs are to be planted there by September the courier reported. This is not only an aesthetic upgrade, but also an important step towards improving the urban climate and combating the so-called heat islands, which are increasingly becoming a problem in many urban areas.

The planned redesign was initiated with the aim of creating an inviting place for relaxation and exchange. With new seating options, the space becomes more attractive, and drivers also have to be prepared for some restrictions as the roadway up to Gumpendorfer Straße is being renewed. A closure between Kurt-Pint-Platz and Liniengasse is also unavoidable. Fortunately, access to the parking spaces remains possible despite the construction site.

Smart irrigation for city trees

Another highlight of the project is the installation of an automatic irrigation system, which was specially developed to provide the newly planted trees and bushes with sufficient water. The focus is on innovative technology: a company from Schwerin supplies the required cisterns made of recycled plastic, while a Rostock technology company develops and programs the control unit and the sensors. This ensures that the plants are well supplied even in dry conditions, without having to rely on external power sources. Sustainability is the focus here, because the use of rainwater ensures an environmentally friendly irrigation system that works in a cycle and promotes local biodiversity with native tree species.

Efforts to improve irrigation are not only found in Mariahilf. Cities around the world are increasingly relying on urban greening to both increase the quality of life and improve the urban climate. Loud Climate knowledge Green areas help reduce noise pollution and fine dust. By absorbing pollutants and producing oxygen, these areas not only improve air quality, but also promote biodiversity by providing habitats for numerous plants and animals.

A new meeting point in Naschpark

Another exciting aspect of the construction work in this area is the new “Naschpark”, which will be built in the immediate vicinity of the Naschmarkt. A parking lot here is being transformed into an attractive green area, where 70 new trees have already been planted. The park will not only serve as a place to relax, but will also offer seating areas, hammocks, lawns and play equipment, making it an ideal place for families and those seeking relaxation.

The current situation shows how important it is to integrate green spaces into our urban planning. While courageous projects are being implemented in various European cities to combine urbanity with nature, Vienna is also consistently pursuing the path to becoming a climate-friendly city with its current initiatives. And who knows: perhaps Stumpergasse will soon become a model for future greening projects in the federal capital.
