Mariahilf transformed: From the parking lot to the green oasis of Naschpark!
Big things are happening in Mariahilf: a former parking lot is being transformed into a green paradise, the Naschpark. With an area of around 6,820 square meters, this new city park will not only provide shade and cool off, but also serve as a place for relaxation and meeting. So reported Vienna.at.
The gradual conversion of a 12,000 square meter parking lot into this oasis of peace is part of Vienna's greening offensive, which has been in full swing since 2021. The first trees, including silk trees, Judas trees and crabapple trees, have already been delivered and are waiting to be planted in the ground. The surface on which the tree planting takes place is sometimes only 70 centimeters thick, as the Naschpark is built on a roof of the Vienna river vault and the subway that is over 100 years old.
A place for everyone
When planning the park, the citizens' wishes were the focus: they wanted green spaces, the preservation of the popular flea market and consumption-free zones. “The farmers market will remain open throughout construction and will not be affected,” said the project team.
The park will offer exciting features - from shaded pergolas and seating to picnic tables, hammocks, sunbathing areas and a balance machine for children. A viewing point will also be created that invites visitors to take an inviting look.
A step into the future
The implementation of the Naschpark is part of a larger plan: In the 2020-2025 legislative period, 344 “Get out of the asphalt” projects were launched, which brought a total of 3,316 trees and almost 2,000 square meters of water features to the city. The improvements in the microclimate and quality of life are obvious. In addition, over 90 new trees will be planted, including impressive XXL trees, which will probably give the park a lot of character.
The construction phase that has already begun and the redesign of the “market area” are scheduled to be completed by autumn 2025. The entire project is expected to be finalized by the end of 2027. An EU-wide ideas competition for the redesign was part of the approach, with the architecture firm Mostlikely and DnD Landschaftsplanung winning the implementation competition with a creative concept.
In times like these, when urban heat islands become a challenge, Naschpark is a ray of hope. It not only offers shade and cooling, but also becomes a meeting place for the community and a place to feel good. The city of Vienna's great commitment to more green shows that it has a good knack for enriching urban life.
