Vienna in heat fever: discover new oases to combat the summer heat!
Vienna is currently experiencing a heat wave with temperatures over 30 degrees. But don't panic on the Titanic! The city has taken precautions and offers numerous free ways to cool off. In the entire Vienna area, there are 63 kilometers of freely accessible bank areas on the Old and New Danube, on the Danube Island and other places where you can cool off a little in these temperatures.
Amid the summer heat, Vienna is also focusing on creating cooler retreats. The greening and unsealing offensive “Out of the Asphalt” aims to transform asphalted areas into shady and pleasant oases. This initiative is particularly important as heat stress in cities is increasing due to climate change and can have a negative impact on the health and well-being of residents, as nationale-stadtentwicklungspolitik.de reports.
Diverse greening projects
As part of this offensive, numerous projects were launched. An outstanding example is the Praterstern, where the green space was doubled to an impressive 8,000 square meters and the number of trees increased to 100. In addition, the largest water feature in Vienna with an area of 500 square meters now adorns this central location. Further shade providers in the city are the 13 XL trees that were planted here to improve the quality of stay.
A lot has also happened in Simmering. The Tangentenpark has been transformed into a new leisure and relaxation area that features a pond and a fountain playground. The Barbara Prammer Park in Margareten also offers 1,500 square meters of new open space with 14 new trees and various water features.
Also noteworthy is the climate boulevard on Thaliastrasse, which runs over 2.8 kilometers and has been enriched with 240 new trees. In addition, the area was unsealed by 20,000 square meters, giving the city a fresh look.
A look at the balance sheet
The results of the “Get out of the asphalt” projects speak for themselves: a total of 344 projects have already been implemented in 23 districts. The full funding pot of 100 million euros has been exhausted, which shows that Vienna is taking serious steps to improve the city's climate. The projects have resulted in the creation of 85,488 square meters of new greenery, 3,316 new trees, 2,745 additional seating areas and 1,952 square meters of new water features. If that doesn't sound like a successful summer!
