Neunerhaus celebrates 15 years: Helping homeless pets!

A very special anniversary is currently being celebrated in the Neunerhaus: the veterinary practice there has been offering free medical help for the pets of homeless people for 15 years. Under the direction of Eva Wistrela-Lacek, co-founder of the practice, over 35 volunteers have performed more than 22,000 treatments. This remarkable number shows how important the practice's work is for the community.

The ordination times are Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. She not only receives regular vaccinations and general treatments, but also operations that are carried out in collaboration with the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. Around 1,900 animals were treated in 2024 and the practice is in high demand.

Challenges for veterinary practice

Although the city of Vienna supports the practice, it largely relies on donations. However, current inflation has a negative impact on the willingness to donate. In order to continue to provide the necessary medical care for the animals, the practice is constantly looking for volunteers. “We need more support, especially for groups affected by poverty such as pensioners and single women,” demands Wistrela-Lacek. There is currently only one similar facility in Vienna that offers such services.

Employee motivation is strengthened by the belief that no one should be forced to give up their pet. Animals are not just companions, they also represent protection and security. Like a vision of Social skins says that animals should be accessible to everyone without anyone having to go without anything.

Animals in social distress

Especially in crisis situations where people lose everything, their four-legged companions are often the only ones who offer them comfort. Animals bring joy and help overcome loneliness - like the writerDaniel Defoeaptly put: “Cats help to overcome being alone.” There should be no conflict between the need for care and the need to give up an animal.

The website Edge cases provides further information and helps raise awareness of these issues. Through shared commitment, animal protection and social responsibility can go hand in hand. Ultimately, it is crucial that all animals, regardless of the social status of their owners, receive the necessary medical care.
