The first attack occurred in the Liesing district when a 33-year-old man was attacked by a group of five young men on Saturday evening. Although the perpetrators initially tried to snatch his fanny pack, they failed. But the situation quickly escalated: the man was brought to the ground and kicked several times before the robbers finally snatched his fanny pack containing his cell phone and wallet. The perpetrators fled in an unknown direction shortly before midnight. The victim suffered minor injuries and had to be taken to hospital.

Robbery in Brigittenau

Also on the same day, just a few hours earlier, a 15-year-old boy in Vienna-Brigittenau was robbed of his e-scooter, which was worth over 900 euros. The teenager was driving on Leipziger Platz when he was observed by a group of his peers. Suddenly one of the boys borrowed the e-scooter and rode away. When the 15-year-old noticed this and confronted him, he received a punch in the face, causing him to drop the scooter. The perpetrator grabbed the vehicle and fled while the other young people ran away with him. Fortunately, the police were able to arrest the alleged perpetrator, a 15-year-old Swede, at Leipziger Platz, but he did not confess during the first interrogation and was charged with robbery while at large.

The background to these attacks is probably also influenced by the increasing crime figures in Vienna. According to the Vienna Police's crime statistics, there was an 18.1% increase in robbery crimes in 2024 compared to the previous year; the clearance rate is 42.3%. Attempted theft in Mariahilf

An attempted theft was committed in the Mariahilf district on Sunday night. A group of friends were sitting in Fritz Imhoff Park when two unknown men suddenly appeared and harassed the group. One of the perpetrators was wearing a balaclava and tried to steal the backpack of an 18-year-old Serbian citizen. When he packed the backpack, the group of friends was able to detain the perpetrator. The victim was then punched and kicked. While the accomplices fled, the police later identified one of the perpetrators based on a good personal description and arrested him. The accomplice, a 33-year-old Austrian, was also identified at some point.

The current situation in Vienna shows that the security situation is tense and numerous incidents of violence and robbery are plaguing the city.
