Tram chaos in Vienna: Total closure on Rennweg affects lines 71 and 18!
An unexpected tram chaos has been shaping the traffic scene in Vienna since today, July 9, 2025. Track construction work on Vienna's Rennweg leads to a complete closure of tram lines 71 and 18. This not only has a direct impact on passengers, but also on the traffic flow in the area, which is significantly affected.
The Wiener Linien have already reacted: Although lines 71 and 18 have been discontinued, the districts are still connected through alternative means of transport. The U3, the replacement bus 71E and the bus lines 74A, 77A and 80A are available to passengers. The shuttle bus that runs between the U3 station Schlachthausgasse and St. Marx is particularly important to support the mobility of those affected.
Details about restrictions
The construction work will be carried out from June 28th to September 1st, 2025 and will primarily affect commuters from neighboring districts. These should be prepared for longer travel times and detours. The replacement bus 71E runs to the St. Marx station, but four stops – Litfaßstrasse, Molitorgasse, Zippererstrasse and Hauffgasse – will be completely eliminated. Some stops still offer transfer options to the U3, while others will be removed from the transport network entirely.
Tram line 71 currently only runs between Enkplatz and Kaiserebersdorf, which does not necessarily improve the situation for many passengers. Here too, special caution is required as the new route does not guarantee connectivity for all passengers.
Mobility despite construction sites
Those responsible at Wiener Linien emphasize that the third and eleventh districts are still connected via the U3, the replacement bus and the various bus lines. For a quick overview of current construction sites and traffic reports, we recommend regularly visiting the Wiener Linien website. Further information about the construction work and corresponding diversions can be found on the Wiener Linien website here.
In summary, it remains to be said that construction work is unavoidable in order to improve the quality of public transport. Wiener Linien is working to keep the impact on passengers as low as possible and will face the challenge of keeping an eye on mobility needs in the coming weeks.
We will keep you updated on further developments and how they affect traffic in Vienna. After these changes, we can only hope that the Viennese will soon be able to travel through the capital again without major detours.
