Next summer, Vienna will become the center of contemporary music when the Arnold Schönberg Center hosts a special event to mark the 100th birthday of the famous composer Luciano Berio: “Schönberg & Berio Day”. On July 25, 2025, the event will begin at 12:30 p.m. and offers a varied program at various locations in the city. The event is organized by European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), known for its innovative projects and first-class musicians.
A top-class program is offered at four different locations. The starting point is the Arnold Schönberg Center at Zaunergasse 1-3, where works by Berio, Schönberg and Igor Stravinsky will be performed at 12:30 p.m.:
- Luciano Berio: Opus Number Zoo
- Arnold Schönberg: Presto
- Igor Strawinsky: Pastorale
Then at 2:00 p.m. we continue to the Italian Cultural Institute at Ungargasse 43A. The program includes two works by Berio as well as compositions by Sofia Gubaidulina and Pietro Locatelli. At 4:30 p.m. there will be a performance in the impressive Leopold Museum, before the day ends with a concert at the Nordwestbahnhof at 6:30 p.m.
A year full of musical highlights
While preparing for this special day, the EUYO is also planning numerous events for 2024. With over 50 events, including performances in famous cities such as Brussels and New York, the event year will be characterized by works by famous composers such as Gustav Mahler and Luigi Nono. Particularly worth mentioning is the return of well-known personalities such as conductor Iván Fischer and cellist Nicolas Altstaedt as well as the debuts of international talents such as Alexandre Bloch and Isata Kanneh-Mason. These developments show that the EUYO has a good knack for supporting young musicians.
A significant part of the celebrations in Vienna in 2024 will be dedicated to Arnold Schönberg. In the year of his 150th birthday, the motto is “Schönberg 150” 129 events at 16 locations on the program. A comprehensive accompanying program is planned with performances, readings and master classes as well as three exhibitions that deal in detail with Schönberg and his legacy.
A rich musical tapestry
The events in honor of the composer, who is considered a pioneer of modernism, provide exciting insights into the development of music in the 20th century. Schönberg, who was born in Vienna on September 13, 1874 and died in Los Angeles in 1951, is considered one of the most influential figures in music history. His work, particularly the development of twelve-tone music, was a decisive turning point.
The combination of these two significant events – “Schönberg & Berio Day” and the celebrations of Schönberg’s 150th birthday – promises an exciting year for all music lovers. Both experienced and young talents are showcased, and EUYO's programs in particular show that the music world is dynamic and full of surprises. It remains to be seen what new perspectives the coming months will offer.
