Pedestrian seriously injured after accident in Vienna – driver reported!

A serious accident occurred on Wednesday evening on Wiener Landstrasse when a 25-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car at 9:15 p.m. The incident occurred on Erdberger Lände, near Haidingergasse. According to the press, the woman crossed the protective path at this point, even though the traffic light for pedestrians was red.

Despite the dramatic circumstances, the 29-year-old driver who caused the collision was uninjured. The police have already investigated him for negligent bodily harm. While the injured pedestrian was taken to a hospital immediately after first aid by the Vienna professional rescue service, her state of health was stable on Thursday.

Accident analysis and risk factors

Unfortunately, accidents involving pedestrians are not uncommon. According to general statistics, the risk of pedestrians being injured in traffic accidents is disproportionately high. A study by the Federal Highway Research Institute (https://www.bast.de/DE/Publikationen/Foko/2020/2020-23.html) shows that 95% of such accidents occur in local areas and often occur when crossing streets. Children and seniors are particularly at risk, as they often have difficulties in complex traffic situations.

The factors for such incidents are diverse. According to accident forensics, distractions such as the use of cell phones also play a role. After all, there have been cases where statistics show that only a small percentage of pedestrians were mobile when crossing a zebra crossing. Only around 4% of pedestrians use their cell phones, with around 3% doing so while crossing.

Road safety and preventive measures

The analysis of key risk factors has also shown that wider sidewalks, larger roadway widths and improper traffic conditions can contribute significantly to the frequency of accidents. Backlogs or stopped vehicles often do not provide clear visibility for pedestrians, which increases the dangers when crossing.

In view of the tragic events, the need for traffic education and prevention should not be underestimated. Children should receive targeted training on road safety, especially when crossing roads. The aim is to increase awareness of dangerous situations and make behavior in road traffic safer.

The Road Accident Squad has already launched an investigation to investigate what happened surrounding the accident. In this way, the authorities hope to clarify the circumstances and, if necessary, initiate further security measures.
